EFCC Intensifies Probe into Mele Kyari Alleged Money Laundering Activities
Abuja, Nigeria – The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has escalated its investigation into Mele Kyari, the former Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), over allegations of money laundering and financial misconduct during his tenure.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Kyari, who served as the GMD of NNPCL until mid-2024, is under scrutiny for his involvement in the management of refinery rehabilitation funds. The EFCC has traced over ₦661 million (approximately $1.4 million) in suspicious transactions across four bank accounts linked to Kyari. These accounts, domiciled in Jaiz Bank, were temporarily frozen by a Federal High Court in Abuja in August 2025, following an ex parte application by the EFCC. The court granted a 30-day freeze order, with the possibility of renewal, to facilitate ongoing investigations into alleged conspiracy, abuse of office, and money laundering.
The investigation centers on the alleged mismanagement of $7.2 billion allocated for the turnaround maintenance of Nigeria’s refineries. Kyari and other former NNPCL officials are accused of diverting funds intended for refinery repairs into personal accounts and shell companies. The EFCC’s probe has expanded to include the examination of emolument records of refinery officials and the tracing of over ₦80 billion linked to a former refinery managing director.
In response to the allegations, Kyari has denied any wrongdoing. He was questioned by EFCC investigators in September 2025 and released on administrative bail. Following his interrogation, Kyari was ordered to report back to the EFCC daily as the investigation continues.
The case has attracted significant public attention, with civil society groups and legal practitioners demanding accountability. In September 2025, over 500 lawyers and activists marched to the EFCC headquarters in Abuja, urging the commission to prosecute Kyari over the alleged $4 billion refinery scandal.
The EFCC has assured the public of its commitment to thoroughly investigate the allegations and ensure that justice is served. The commission has emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in the management of public funds, particularly in the oil and gas sector, which is vital to Nigeria’s economy.
As the investigation unfolds, the EFCC is expected to provide updates on its findings and any subsequent legal actions. The outcome of this case could have significant implications for anti-corruption efforts in Nigeria and the future of the country’s oil industry.

“FIFA’s Radical 2030 Vision: Massive 64-Team World Cup Expansion On The Table!”.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has revealed that the governing body is exploring the possibility of expanding the 2030 World Cup to include 64 teams. This potential shift follows the recent expansion from 32 to 48 teams for the 2026 tournament, which increased the match count to 104. Infantino advocates for this change to provide smaller footballing nations with greater opportunities to qualify, arguing that increased representation motivates countries to invest in their local leagues, academies, and national programs. While the proposal remains subject to approval by FIFA’s decision-making bodies, it aims to narrow the competitive gap between traditional powerhouses and emerging teams. The 2030 event, which commemorates the tournament’s centenary, is already unique for being hosted by six countries across three continents: Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay, Morocco, Portugal, and Spain.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
FIFA is considering a massive shake-up for the 2030 World Cup, with President Gianni Infantino hinting at a potential expansion to 64 teams. Building on the success of the 48-team format introduced for 2026, Infantino believes that giving more countries a seat at the table is essential for the global development of the sport. He noted that under the current expanded format, teams from all continents have proven their competitiveness, suggesting that the divide between established nations and newcomers is shrinking. If approved, this 64-team structure would be implemented for a historic tournament already set to span three continents and six host nations to celebrate the competition’s 100th anniversary. FIFA is currently evaluating the logistical and financial implications of such an expansion before making a final decision.
