Leadership Purge at NNPCL: Refinery Heads, Senior Officials Removed
In a bold restructuring move, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has dismissed the managing directors of its three refineries—Port Harcourt Refining Company, Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company, and Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company—as part of a broader overhaul of the organization’s leadership.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The shakeup also affected other top-level officials, including Bala Wunti, former head of the National Petroleum Investment Management Services (NAPIMS), a subsidiary of NNPCL. Sources confirmed that several senior personnel nearing retirement were also asked to step aside. This realignment follows a directive by the new management to reinvigorate operations and meet performance expectations.
Though NNPCL’s spokesperson, Olufemi Soneye, declined to comment officially, insiders described the dismissals as necessary for injecting fresh energy into the company. The restructuring comes on the heels of the April 2, 2025, dismissal of former Group Chief Executive Officer Mele Kyari and other board members, under President Bola Tinubu’s reform agenda aimed at boosting Nigeria’s oil and gas output.
Presidency sources indicated that the overhaul was triggered by persistent underperformance and an inability to meet production targets. An insider noted that the old leadership had stagnated progress and failed to meet Nigeria’s OPEC quota for years, calling for a fresh team of industry-focused technocrats to drive the company’s strategic vision.
President Tinubu reportedly set strict performance benchmarks, including ramping up crude production to 2 million barrels per day by 2027 and 3 million by 2030, alongside a gas output target of 10 billion cubic meters.
In the ongoing shakeup, Maryam Idrisu was named Managing Director of NNPC Trading, the division responsible for handling all crude oil transactions.
These leadership changes are seen as part of Tinubu’s wider push to reposition NNPCL as a performance-driven and accountable entity.
