Tanzania Launches Direct Flights to Lagos in Major Boost for Africa Travel
Tanzania has officially launched direct flights to Lagos, Nigeria, marking a major step to improve air travel between East and West Africa.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The new service, operated by Air Tanzania, connects Dar es Salaam with Lagos without stopovers. Officials say the move will help trade, tourism and business ties between the two countries and across the region.
The first direct flight landed in Lagos on Friday, where Tanzanian and Nigerian aviation authorities celebrated the launch with a short ceremony.
“This is not just about flying planes. This is about bringing our people closer, opening markets, and creating opportunities,” said Air Tanzania Managing Director Ladislaus Matindi. “We are proud to connect Tanzania and Nigeria directly for the first time.”
Key Details of the Route
The airline said the new route will operate several times a week, though exact schedules may change based on demand. The flights are expected to cut travel time by hours, as passengers no longer need to connect through Addis Ababa, Nairobi, or Middle East hubs.
Travel analysts say the Lagos route is one of Air Tanzania’s most ambitious expansions in recent years. The carrier has already launched flights to Guangzhou, Mumbai, and London as part of a strategy to grow its international network.
For Nigerian travelers, the new service provides easier access to Tanzania’s famous tourism sites, including Serengeti National Park, Mount Kilimanjaro, and Zanzibar. For Tanzanians, Lagos offers a gateway to West Africa’s largest economy and business capital.
Strengthening Regional Links
Officials from both countries said the direct flights reflect a broader push for stronger African integration. Nigeria and Tanzania are members of the African Continental Free Trade Area, which aims to boost trade by lowering barriers across the continent.
“Direct air connections are essential if Africa wants to trade more with itself,” said Nigerian Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo during the launch event. “This new route shows the vision of an Africa that is connected, cooperative, and committed to growth.”
The launch also comes as African airlines work to compete with Middle Eastern and European carriers, which dominate long-haul travel to and from the continent. By offering more direct connections, African carriers hope to keep more passengers and revenue within the region.
Travelers React
Early passengers on the first flights said the direct link was long overdue.
“I used to spend almost a whole day connecting through other cities just to reach Dar es Salaam,” said Nigerian businessman Chuka Obinna. “Now I can get there in a few hours. It will help me expand my work into East Africa.”
Tourism operators in Tanzania also welcomed the move, saying Nigeria is a growing market for safari and beach holidays.
“We expect more Nigerian tourists to visit Tanzania,” said Zainab Ali, who runs a tour company in Arusha. “At the same time, Tanzanians can discover Lagos as a cultural and business hub. It’s good for both sides.”
Broader Impact
Experts say the route could encourage other airlines in Africa to open direct flights between major cities that remain poorly connected.
According to the African Airlines Association, fewer than 20 percent of flights within Africa are direct. Many travelers still rely on foreign hubs like Dubai, Istanbul or Paris to move between African countries.
“This is why today’s launch matters,” said aviation analyst Samuel Okoye. “It’s not just Tanzania and Nigeria. It is a signal that African carriers can build bridges across the continent.”
Looking Ahead
Air Tanzania said it will monitor demand on the Dar es Salaam–Lagos route and may increase frequency if passenger numbers grow. The airline is also studying possible connections to Accra, Dakar, and Johannesburg in the coming years.
For now, the launch is being seen as a breakthrough for African travelers, businesses, and families.
“Connectivity is the future of Africa,” said Matindi, the Air Tanzania chief. “When we connect, we grow together.”
