Food Prices Remain High Globally as Nigeria Sees Slight Relief

Published

on

Food prices are staying stubbornly high around the world, even as Nigeria reports a modest slowing in food inflation.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Global food commodity prices reached a two-year high in July, driven by surging meat and vegetable oil costs, according to the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization. Meanwhile, in Nigeria, food inflation was 22.74 % in July — down slightly from earlier months but still placing strain on households.

Key Facts First

  • The FAO’s Food Price Index averaged 130.1 points in August, nearly unchanged from July, but still about 6.9 % higher than a year ago.

  • In Nigeria, food inflation remains the largest component of overall inflation.

  • Essential food items such as rice, onions, tomatoes, and peppers have seen sharp price rises over the past year, pushing the cost of preparing staple meals upward.

  • Global food price pressures are being fuelled by increases in meat and oil markets, even as cereals and dairy costs have eased.

Background and Trends
The FAO index, which tracks prices of major food commodities, showed mixed movements in August: declines in cereals and dairy offset increases in meat, sugar, and vegetable oils. Meat prices reached record levels, while global vegetable oil costs climbed further.

In Nigeria, inflation has been under pressure since 2023, following policy changes including subsidy removals and currency devaluation. The “Jollof Index” — which tracks the cost of ingredients for the popular rice dish jollof — showed that the cost of making one pot of jollof jumped steeply, reflecting broader food cost stress.

Earlier in 2025, Nigeria’s headline inflation also eased slightly, even as food prices remained high.  Officials note that part of the easing comes from changes to how inflation is measured — including updating the base year and reweighting the consumption basket.

Voices from the Field
A consumer in Lagos said, “I’m eating less variety now. Tomatoes and peppers cost too much.” (paraphrased)

Economists warn that even a small drop in inflation doesn’t mean relief is close. Rising global commodity costs, supply chain disruptions, and climate shocks still threaten further price shocks.

A researcher with the FAO noted that “price pressures in meat and vegetable oils continue to counterbalance declines in cereals and dairy.”

Human rights groups in Nigeria say the high cost of food is deepening poverty, and the poorest households are cutting portions or skipping meals.

Impact and Next Steps
For many families in Nigeria and elsewhere, food remains the largest share of household spending. High prices erode savings and increase the risk of hunger or malnutrition.

Governments are under pressure to intervene. Potential actions include subsidies, targeted assistance to the poor, and efforts to stabilize food supply chains.

Analysts say long-term solutions will require expanding local agricultural production, improving infrastructure, and reducing volatility in global commodity markets.

As the world enters the last quarter of 2025, how successfully nations manage food price pressures could shape economic stability and public welfare.

Air Peace Breaks Silence On Gatwick–Lagos Disruption, Denies Abandoning Passengers.

Published

Nigeria’s leading carrier, Air Peace Limited, has reacted to the disruption of its London Gatwick–Lagos flight service on May 1, 2026, explaining the circumstances surrounding the incident.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a statement posted on , the airline insisted that no passenger was abandoned and maintained that its actions were guided strictly by safety procedures.

The management said a viral social media video claiming passengers were left stranded without support or communication “does not accurately represent the full situation surrounding the disruption.”

According to Air Peace, the flight was impacted by a bird strike, which it described as a recognised force majeure occurrence in aviation that required the aircraft to be grounded immediately for safety inspections.

“The affected flight experienced a bird strike necessitating the immediate grounding of the aircraft for comprehensive safety inspections in line with global aviation standards,” the statement read, adding that “safety is not negotiable, and under no circumstance would we operate an aircraft without the required safety clearance.”

The airline said passengers were promptly informed of the incident and the cancellation of the flight, and that arrangements were made for their welfare, including hotel accommodation at the Hilton London Gatwick.

However, it acknowledged that certain operational challenges affected passenger handling, especially in relation to baggage retrieval.

“We encountered additional operational constraints, including airport congestion and delays from ground handling services responsible for baggage retrieval,” it stated.

Air Peace clarified that baggage handling at international airports is managed by third-party ground handling companies and is not directly controlled by the airline.

“Baggage handling at international airports is managed by designated ground handling companies and as such, Air Peace does not exercise direct control over these processes,” it added.

The airline strongly denied allegations that passengers were abandoned, insisting that communication was maintained throughout the disruption.

“At no point were passengers abandoned. Communication was maintained with all affected passengers, and every effort was made to ensure their welfare,” it said, noting that accommodation was provided while arrangements were underway to deploy another aircraft.

Air Peace also criticised the backlash it has received, describing it as excessive and unjustified given the safety-related nature of the incident.

“We find the ongoing negative hounding of our airline over a safety-driven, force majeure incident to be shocking and unwarranted,” it stated, while noting that the flight captain kept passengers updated throughout the process.

While acknowledging the inconvenience caused, the airline urged for understanding, stressing that aviation operations are complex and cannot be treated as instant processes.

“We recognise that aviation disruptions can be distressing; however, aviation operations are not ‘plug and play’,” it said, noting the involvement of multiple stakeholders and strict safety regulations.

Reaffirming its commitment, Air Peace said it remains dedicated to passenger safety, comfort, and welfare, adding that it will continue to improve its processes to better handle unexpected disruptions.

reports that Portable expressed his frustration during a live Instagram video shortly after the bout on Saturday morning, insisting that the fight was biased against him.

He claimed Carter Efe was unprofessional and accused the organisers of failing to properly count his punches during the match.

Portable said, “I was robbed. Carter Efe was not professional enough. He was strangling with his long hands and height. I threw him many punches, why didn’t you people count them? Any blow that I threw to him ought to count even if it meets him on the shoulder or hand. And to the organisers, I want my stream money amounting to about ₦200 million. Just give me my money before I cause trouble.

“They did ojoro for me. All of you are mad. Carter Efe was just holding my neck. I was punching him too but you people are not talking about that. They knew he is tall and has long hands but still put him in a boxing match with me.”

Despite his complaints, Portable said the loss did not matter to him, adding that the birth of his child was more important than any boxing title.

He said, “You can only buy a belt with money, but a child cannot be bought. You people cheated. They can’t pay the money amounting to the sum of N23 billion. I thought I was going to dance with my belt but I ended up with my new baby.

“My wife just gave birth to a bouncing baby boy. I value that more than a belt. You can buy the belt but not my child.”

Carter Efe Claims Victory By Unanimous Decision

Portable’s reaction followed Carter Efe’s unanimous decision victory at the Chaos in the Ring 4 event held at Balmoral Hall in Lagos.

All three judges scored the bout 27–30 in favour of Carter Efe, bringing Portable’s celebrity boxing run to an end.

Before the fight, Portable had confidently predicted victory, saying he would claim his third belt after previous wins over Charles Okocha and Speed Darlington.

“I will use you to collect my third belt,” he had boasted. “Charles Okocha was bigger than you, Speed Darlington was bigger than you, and I beat them. I will beat you now.”

However, Carter Efe dismissed the challenge ahead of the fight, responding, “One punch and you fall.”

During the match, Carter Efe used his height and reach advantage to dominate the three-round contest, landing cleaner shots and controlling the tempo throughout.

The win secured Carter Efe the new celebrity boxing championship title.
