Air Peace Chief Says UK Blocked Airline’s London Entry for Seven Years

Published

on

Air Peace chairman Allen Onyema said British authorities prevented his airline from getting clearance to fly into London for seven years, delaying the Nigerian carrier’s entry into one of the world’s busiest aviation markets.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Onyema made the disclosure in Abuja while speaking about the struggles African airlines face when trying to compete internationally. He said Air Peace finally launched its Lagos-to-London flights earlier this year after a long fight with regulators in the United Kingdom.

“This was not an easy journey,” Onyema said. “For seven years, they refused to give us clearance. But we never gave up, and today Nigerians can fly directly from Lagos to London on a Nigerian airline.”

Background of the Dispute

Air Peace, founded in 2013, is Nigeria’s largest airline. It operates domestic and international flights across Africa, the Middle East, India, and now Europe. The airline announced its Lagos-London service in March 2024, quickly becoming a popular option for Nigerian travelers.

Onyema said the airline’s attempt to secure a London route began as early as 2016, but the application was blocked repeatedly. He did not provide details of the specific restrictions but suggested the delay was linked to protectionist policies in the UK aviation sector.

Industry experts say foreign carriers, especially those from Africa, often face barriers when trying to access key European destinations. Major airlines from Europe, such as British Airways and Virgin Atlantic, have long dominated the lucrative Nigeria-UK market.

Lower Fares, More Competition

When Air Peace finally began flying to London, it shook up the market by offering lower ticket prices. Fares on the Lagos-London route, which had climbed above $1,500 at times, dropped significantly as a result of the competition.

Travelers welcomed the move, saying it was long overdue. “For the first time in years, I could afford to fly to London to see my family,” said Lagos resident Chinedu Nwosu. “Air Peace made it possible.”

British Airways and Virgin Atlantic have also adjusted their pricing in response to Air Peace’s entry. Aviation analysts say this is a clear example of how increased competition benefits consumers.

Ongoing Challenges

Despite the progress, Onyema warned that Nigerian airlines still face many obstacles when trying to expand internationally. He cited high operating costs, limited access to foreign exchange, and political pressure from larger carriers.

“It is not just about London. Anywhere we try to go, we meet resistance,” he said. “But we are determined to keep fighting. Nigerian airlines deserve the same opportunities as others.”

The Nigerian government has pledged to support local airlines through bilateral air service agreements, also known as BASAs. These agreements are meant to guarantee fair access for carriers on both sides. Officials say they will continue pressing the UK and other countries to respect Nigeria’s aviation rights.

Wider Impact

Air Peace’s success in breaking into the London market has wider implications for Africa’s aviation industry. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has long said that Africa is underserved by its own airlines, with foreign carriers controlling most international routes.

Analysts believe Air Peace’s entry into Europe could inspire other African airlines to expand as well. “This is a milestone,” said Lagos-based aviation consultant Tunde Adebayo. “If Air Peace can survive the London route, it will prove that African airlines can compete globally.”

For passengers, the biggest impact remains affordability. Many Nigerians rely on the UK route for business, education, and family connections. With more options, prices are likely to stay lower, easing the financial burden on travelers.

Onyema said Air Peace plans to expand further into Europe and North America in the coming years. Routes under consideration include New York, Houston, and Frankfurt.

“We are not stopping in London,” Onyema said. “We want to show the world that Nigerian airlines can meet international standards and provide quality service.”

For now, the chairman says the airline’s focus is on maintaining its London route and proving that it can compete fairly with established European carriers.

“This is just the beginning,” he said.

This comes after Carter Efe secured a unanimous decision victory over street-hop artist Habeeb Badmus, popularly known as Portable, at the Chaos in the Ring 4 event held on Friday night at Balmoral Hall, Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.

E-Money reaffirmed his promise after the Chief Executive Officer of Balmoral Group Promotions, Ezekiel Adamu, raised the issue at the end of the event.

He congratulated Carter Efe on his win and reiterated his commitment to the reward.

E-Money said, “You know we put our money where our mouth is, and so congratulations Carter on your win. ₦50 million for you.”

Adamu also praised the success of the event, noting that it met expectations.

He said, “We promised Chaos in the Ring and we have delivered very entertaining fights tonight. There is more coming, thanks to everyone that made this a success and to the fighters for the great display.”

The fight between Carter Efe and Portable was preceded by weeks of heated exchanges between both entertainers.

Portable came into the bout with prior celebrity boxing wins over Charles Okocha and Speed Darlington, which had earned him two belts. Before the fight, he confidently declared that Carter Efe would be his next opponent to secure a third title.

He said, “I will use you to collect my third belt. Charles Okocha was bigger than you, Speed Darlington was bigger than you and I beat them. I will beat you now.”

Carter Efe responded simply, saying, “One punch and you fall.”

When the fight began, Portable opened aggressively with wild punches, but Carter Efe controlled the pace using his height and reach advantage.

As the rounds progressed, Portable continued with wide swings and clinches, while Carter Efe landed cleaner, more effective combinations.

At the end of the bout, all three judges scored it 27–30 in favour of Carter Efe, awarding him a unanimous decision victory and the celebrity boxing title.

Air Peace Breaks Silence On Gatwick–Lagos Disruption, Denies Abandoning Passengers.

Published

Nigeria’s leading carrier, Air Peace Limited, has reacted to the disruption of its London Gatwick–Lagos flight service on May 1, 2026, explaining the circumstances surrounding the incident.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a statement posted on , the airline insisted that no passenger was abandoned and maintained that its actions were guided strictly by safety procedures.

The management said a viral social media video claiming passengers were left stranded without support or communication “does not accurately represent the full situation surrounding the disruption.”

According to Air Peace, the flight was impacted by a bird strike, which it described as a recognised force majeure occurrence in aviation that required the aircraft to be grounded immediately for safety inspections.

“The affected flight experienced a bird strike necessitating the immediate grounding of the aircraft for comprehensive safety inspections in line with global aviation standards,” the statement read, adding that “safety is not negotiable, and under no circumstance would we operate an aircraft without the required safety clearance.”

The airline said passengers were promptly informed of the incident and the cancellation of the flight, and that arrangements were made for their welfare, including hotel accommodation at the Hilton London Gatwick.

However, it acknowledged that certain operational challenges affected passenger handling, especially in relation to baggage retrieval.

“We encountered additional operational constraints, including airport congestion and delays from ground handling services responsible for baggage retrieval,” it stated.

Air Peace clarified that baggage handling at international airports is managed by third-party ground handling companies and is not directly controlled by the airline.

“Baggage handling at international airports is managed by designated ground handling companies and as such, Air Peace does not exercise direct control over these processes,” it added.

The airline strongly denied allegations that passengers were abandoned, insisting that communication was maintained throughout the disruption.

“At no point were passengers abandoned. Communication was maintained with all affected passengers, and every effort was made to ensure their welfare,” it said, noting that accommodation was provided while arrangements were underway to deploy another aircraft.

Air Peace also criticised the backlash it has received, describing it as excessive and unjustified given the safety-related nature of the incident.

“We find the ongoing negative hounding of our airline over a safety-driven, force majeure incident to be shocking and unwarranted,” it stated, while noting that the flight captain kept passengers updated throughout the process.

While acknowledging the inconvenience caused, the airline urged for understanding, stressing that aviation operations are complex and cannot be treated as instant processes.

“We recognise that aviation disruptions can be distressing; however, aviation operations are not ‘plug and play’,” it said, noting the involvement of multiple stakeholders and strict safety regulations.

Reaffirming its commitment, Air Peace said it remains dedicated to passenger safety, comfort, and welfare, adding that it will continue to improve its processes to better handle unexpected disruptions.

reports that Portable expressed his frustration during a live Instagram video shortly after the bout on Saturday morning, insisting that the fight was biased against him.

He claimed Carter Efe was unprofessional and accused the organisers of failing to properly count his punches during the match.

Portable said, “I was robbed. Carter Efe was not professional enough. He was strangling with his long hands and height. I threw him many punches, why didn’t you people count them? Any blow that I threw to him ought to count even if it meets him on the shoulder or hand. And to the organisers, I want my stream money amounting to about ₦200 million. Just give me my money before I cause trouble.

“They did ojoro for me. All of you are mad. Carter Efe was just holding my neck. I was punching him too but you people are not talking about that. They knew he is tall and has long hands but still put him in a boxing match with me.”

Despite his complaints, Portable said the loss did not matter to him, adding that the birth of his child was more important than any boxing title.

He said, “You can only buy a belt with money, but a child cannot be bought. You people cheated. They can’t pay the money amounting to the sum of N23 billion. I thought I was going to dance with my belt but I ended up with my new baby.

“My wife just gave birth to a bouncing baby boy. I value that more than a belt. You can buy the belt but not my child.”
