NiMet Forecasts Heavy Rain, Thunderstorms Across Nigeria Through Wednesday

Nigeria’s weather agency has warned of widespread rain and thunderstorms across the country starting today and lasting until Wednesday.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency, known as NiMet, said in a statement on Saturday that the weather pattern could affect travel, farming, and daily activities in many states.

According to NiMet, northern cities such as Maiduguri, Sokoto, and Kano will likely experience heavy rainfall with thunder. Central areas, including Abuja, Jos, and Minna, are also expected to see strong storms. Southern states like Lagos, Port Harcourt, and Calabar may face continuous showers and cloudy skies.

The agency urged Nigerians to take precautions against possible flooding, slippery roads, and flight delays. “We advise people in flood-prone communities to be careful and avoid risky areas. Farmers should also plan their activities according to the forecast,” the statement read.

NiMet said the rainy season is entering a critical phase, with storms becoming more frequent and intense. In recent weeks, heavy rainfall has led to flash floods in several states, damaging homes and farmland. Authorities fear that more flooding could occur if the rains continue at the same pace.

Last month, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reported that thousands of people were displaced by floods in Adamawa, Benue, and Kogi states. Experts say these floods were worsened by poor drainage systems, blocked waterways, and rising water levels in major rivers.

NiMet warned that thunderstorms could disrupt road travel and increase the risk of accidents. It also said air travelers should expect possible delays or cancellations due to reduced visibility. Power supply may also be affected, as storms often damage electrical lines.

Farmers across the country depend on rain for planting, but too much water can destroy crops. In the north, where farmers are harvesting maize and rice, heavy rain could wash away stored produce. In the south, cassava and yam farms may face waterlogging.

Experts say the forecast is part of a larger climate challenge. Nigeria is among the countries most vulnerable to extreme weather caused by climate change. Scientists have linked the rising frequency of storms and floods to global warming, which is increasing rainfall intensity in West Africa.

Residents in Lagos and Port Harcourt told reporters they were already preparing for the forecasted rain. “Whenever NiMet gives a warning, we try to take it seriously,” said Emeka Obi, a trader in Lagos. “Last year, my shop was flooded, and I lost goods worth hundreds of thousands of naira. I don’t want that to happen again.”

In Abuja, transport workers said they expect fewer passengers on rainy days. “Once it starts raining, many people stay at home or go out late,” said Ibrahim Musa, a taxi driver. “Traffic becomes worse, and some roads are almost impossible to pass.”

NiMet said it would continue to update the public with daily forecasts through television, radio, and online platforms. The agency also urged local governments to work with disaster response teams to reduce the impact of the weather.

Nigeria’s rainy season usually runs from April to October in the south and May to September in the north. The peak often comes between July and September, when rainfall is heaviest.

With only a few weeks left before the rains ease, officials say communities must remain alert. “We cannot stop the rain, but we can prepare,” NiMet said. “People should listen to weather reports, clear drainages around their homes, and avoid dangerous areas during storms.”

As Nigeria braces for days of rain and thunder, the government and citizens are being reminded once again of the need for stronger climate resilience.

Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka, the Spiritual Director of the Adoration Ministry in Enugu, recently responded to critics by highlighting the significant risks he undertook to support Peter Obi during his impeachment as Governor of Anambra State. • Challenging his critics: Fr. Mbaka insisted that the efforts he made for Obi during that period were far greater than what his current supporters could replicate, and he encouraged people to verify these events with individuals like Chris Uba and Ibeto, who were present at the time.

  • Reaffirming his stance: He concluded by dismissing the criticism as uninformed, declaring that he has always been a solution rather than a problem and that he maintains a deep love for his people.

“We Will Rig You!”: Peter Obi Issues Explosive Warning To INEC Over Alleged Election Manipulation!.

Published

on

During a recent visit to Washington, D.C., Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), argued that the prevalence of election rigging in Nigeria is largely due to voters failing to actively defend their ballots. Obi emphasized that while candidates play a role in the process, credible outcomes ultimately depend on citizens remaining at their polling units to ensure votes are counted transparently. He criticized the “transactional” nature of Nigerian politics, suggesting that many voters prioritize other activities over the essential task of monitoring the electoral process. According to Obi, Nigeria’s primary challenge is poor political leadership, and he urged citizens to take collective ownership of their votes to demand the accountable governance required for the country to succeed.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has called for increased citizen involvement in protecting electoral integrity. During a recent trip to Washington, D.C., Obi stated that election manipulation persists because voters frequently leave polling stations before the counting process is completed. He argued that:

  • Voters must proactively defend their ballots at polling units to ensure transparency and prevent rigging.

  • Nigeria’s fundamental obstacle is a crisis of political leadership, rather than a lack of natural or human resources.

  • Real change requires Nigerians to move beyond passive participation and take active responsibility for the electoral process.

  • Call for Unity: The Minister urged Nigerians to prioritize national interest over partisan politics, noting that insecurity is not a tool for scoring political points.

  • Criticism of Opposition: Matawalle accused certain opposition figures of exploiting the security situation to incite the public against the government and advance their own political agendas, rather than helping to address the crisis.

  • Combating Misinformation: He raised alarm over the circulation of “fake and recycled” videos on social media—some dating back years or originating from other countries—which are falsely presented as current events to suggest worsening security under the Tinubu administration. He encouraged citizens to verify information before sharing it.

  • Government Commitment: Highlighting that the Federal Government has ordered security forces to deal decisively with criminal elements, Matawalle acknowledged that while progress is being made, complex security challenges cannot be resolved overnight.

  • Public Cooperation: He called for continued public patience, prayer, and the provision of actionable intelligence to security forces to help restore peace across the country.

The Minister’s comments come amid renewed public anxiety following reports of mass abductions at schools in Oyo and Borno states.
