Crude Oil Theft In Nigeria Linked To Global Syndicates – NNPCL Boss Sounds Alarm
The Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Bashir Ojulari, has revealed that international syndicates are exploiting security gaps to engage in crude oil theft across Africa. He called for strengthened national and continental security frameworks to effectively address the challenge.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Ojulari made the remarks on Monday during the opening of the Africa Chief of Defence Staff Conference in Abuja. He stressed that crude oil theft and related illegal activities are not purely local but involve sophisticated international networks taking advantage of vulnerabilities in state, national, and continental security structures.
Highlighting recent progress, Ojulari noted that crude theft and pipeline vandalism, particularly in Nigeria’s oil-rich Niger Delta, have been significantly curtailed. He credited government initiatives and the dedication of the nation’s security forces for the improvement.
“Security is a critical pillar of the energy sector and plays a strategic role in achieving national, regional, and continental energy security objectives,” Ojulari stated. “Through collaborative efforts, we have witnessed marked improvements in our operating environment. The challenges of crude theft, pipeline attacks, and low pipeline availability, which were previously significant, are now largely under control.”
Ojulari further revealed that pipeline and terminal crude oil receipts, which had previously fallen as low as 20 to 30 percent, are now approaching full capacity thanks to coordinated efforts by security and intelligence agencies.
The conference drew a host of prominent dignitaries, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Bola Tinubu; United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed; Nigeria’s National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu; Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa; ECOWAS Commission President Omar Touray; African Union Commission Chairperson Mahamoud Youssouf; former Nigerian UN Permanent Representative Ibrahim Gambari; and Federal Inland Revenue Service Chairman Zacch Adedeji.
