Chelle Draws The Line: Nigeria Coach Demands Compensation Before Stepping Down
Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) coach Eric Chelle has insisted that he must receive full compensation if the federation decides to terminate his contract, amid mounting calls for his dismissal. Chelle’s future has come under intense scrutiny following Nigeria’s disappointing performance at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), where the home-based Eagles suffered consecutive losses to Senegal and Sudan, exiting at the group stage.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The early elimination has reignited debates over whether the former Mali international is the right choice to steer Nigeria into the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, which are set to resume in less than two weeks.
In an interview with journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, Chelle acknowledged the swirling rumours about his possible sacking but made it clear he would not step down quietly.
“I have heard a lot of stories about them wanting to sack me and replace me with someone else. I have heard about that,” Chelle stated. “I know, quite well, that I can be fired after one match. This is life in football, but if they decide to do that, they must be prepared to pay up the remainder of my contract.”
While the NFF has yet to issue an official comment on Chelle’s position, the spotlight is now on the Super Eagles’ upcoming Group C clash against Rwanda in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
The Rwandan national team, led by coach Adel Amrouche, is scheduled to arrive in Uyo on Wednesday, September 3, ahead of the September 6 fixture at Godswill Akpabio International Stadium. The Amavubi are expected to announce their squad later this week.
Nigeria heads into the tie seeking maximum points after a mixed run of results. Rwanda stunned the Eagles 2-1 during their last visit to Uyo in a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, but Nigeria bounced back with a 2-0 away win in Kigali earlier this year.
