BREAKING: Political Earthquake As Benue Assembly Speaker Steps Down

In the letter titled “Resignation As The Speaker, Benue State House of Assembly,” Dajoh stated, “I write to resign my position as the Speaker, Benue State House of Assembly, effective today, August 24, 2025. This is done in good faith and in the best interest of the state. I want to appreciate my dear colleagues for the opportunity they gave me to be the first among equals. I pledge to remain committed to my duties as a legislator and representative of Gboko West State Constituency.”
The resignation comes just two days after Governor Hyacinth Alia denied allegations of involvement in any plot to remove the Speaker. In a statement issued through his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, on Friday, the governor dismissed speculation of a leadership crisis within the Assembly.
“The attention of Government House, Makurdi, has been drawn to speculations regarding alleged attempts to impeach the Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Hyacinth Aondona Dajoh,” the statement read. “Governor Hyacinth Alia is not aware of, and has no involvement whatsoever in, any purported attempt to remove the Speaker or in any activities currently taking place in the Benue State House of Assembly. The Governor holds the legislature in the highest esteem and maintains unwavering respect for the rule of law as well as the principle of separation of powers among the three arms of government. He has consistently responded to communications and resolutions transmitted to him by the House.”
Dajoh’s resignation is expected to trigger an emergency session of the Assembly to decide on new leadership, as political observers watch for possible implications on the state’s power dynamics.
