UK Unveils Tough Ban: Criminals Barred From Sports, Pubs, And Travel
The United Kingdom government has unveiled new sentencing powers that will allow judges to impose sweeping restrictions on offenders, barring them from pubs, concerts, sports events, and even travel. The measures, announced on Sunday as part of the government’s Plan for Change, aim to strengthen community-based punishments, deter reoffending, and make streets across Britain safer.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to Nivo News, the policy grants courts authority to enforce driving limits, travel bans, and geographic restriction zones that confine offenders to designated areas. Officials say the changes are designed to ensure that even those serving non-custodial sentences face real and tangible penalties.
In a statement published on the government’s website, Lord Chancellor and Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood said widening the range of punishments available to judges reflects a tougher approach to crime. “When criminals break society’s rules, they must be punished. Those serving their sentences in the community must have their freedom restricted there, too. These new punishments should remind all offenders that, under this Government, crime does not pay,” she said.
Currently, judges can only impose limited bans, such as restricting entry to football stadiums for match-day offences. Under the new plan, these powers will be expanded to cover any offence, giving courts greater flexibility to tailor sentences.
Offenders who violate the restrictions risk being summoned back to court or returned to prison, depending on their original sentence. The government confirmed that this initiative forms part of wider reforms to prevent prison overcrowding, with over 2,400 new prison places opened since July 2024 and a £7 billion investment to deliver a total of 14,000 additional spaces.
The statement further disclosed that funding for the Probation Service will rise by up to £700 million by 2028/29, increasing its current annual budget of approximately £1.6 billion. Officials say these reforms will ensure dangerous offenders are securely housed while reinforcing public confidence in the justice system.
