Speaking on Thursday during an interview on a national television program, General Musa praised the coordinated efforts of the Nigerian Army, Navy, and Air Force, describing the operation as a major breakthrough in the fight against terrorism.

“This is one of the most significant arrests in recent years,” he said. “The capture of these two commanders reflects the level of planning and intelligence-sharing that went into the operation. These are individuals who had been hunted for a very long time, and their arrest demonstrates that intelligence and operations are now working hand in hand.”

Musa explained that the suspects had evaded security forces for years, forcing the military to sustain intensive covert surveillance. “Our personnel have been working day and night to track these individuals down. I can assure Nigerians that things will continue to improve,” he added, noting that the success was due to the synergy among all security agencies—unlike in the past, when operations were fragmented.

Earlier, the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, confirmed the arrest of Mahmud Muhammad Usman, leader of Ansaru, an al-Qaeda-affiliated group, and Mahmud al-Nigeri, head of the violent Mahmuda faction, which has carried out multiple attacks in north-central Nigeria this year.

“These two men have been on Nigeria’s most-wanted list for years,” Ribadu told journalists. “They orchestrated numerous assaults on civilians, security forces, and critical infrastructure, including the 2022 Kuje prison attack that freed dozens of Boko Haram members, as well as the 2013 strike on Niger’s uranium facility.”

While Dr. Tahir, a fresh graduate from Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, was killed by the abductors, Dr. Babatunde, a housemanship staff at Edo University Teaching Hospital, Auchi, was released on January 15 after a ₦50 million ransom was paid.

The suspects—Saminu Kawujie, Idris Abubakar, and Sani Abubakar—were apprehended in separate operations. Kawujie was arrested on February 3 at Warrake Forest, Owan East LGA, during a bush-combing operation carried out by police, local hunters, and vigilante groups. Items recovered from him included two knives, two mobile phones, a UBA ATM card, and ₦20,250. Identification parades confirmed him as one of the abductors.

Idris Abubakar and Sani Abubakar were arrested on February 8 at the Specialist Hospital, Auchi. Both were identified as part of the gang, with Idris specifically linked to receiving the ransom for Dr. Babatunde’s release.

ASP Eno Ikoedem, the police spokesperson, said investigations are ongoing to dismantle the entire criminal network responsible for the Auchi kidnappings.
