According to Nivo News, Lagos had earlier submitted a formal bid to host the Games, prompting a two-day inspection tour of key sporting facilities by top officials of the Lagos State Sports Commission in company with a delegation from the National Sports Commission (NSC).

The inspection covered major venues across the state, including Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere, the National Stadium, the refurbished Elegbata Sports Complex, Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, the Cricket Oval at Tafawa Balewa Square, Rowe Park Sports Centre in Yaba, the University of Lagos Sports Complex, CMS Grammar School in Bariga, and the Agege Stadium.

Fatodu highlighted Lagos’ pedigree as a consistent host of major sporting events, stressing that the state is approaching the Games with a vision beyond competition. “Sports have evolved beyond traditional engagement; they represent a lifelong pursuit of purpose. That’s the vision Lagos State is committed to,” he said, adding that preparations include reconstruction, renovation, and repositioning of key facilities to reflect a message of unity, youth empowerment, and national cohesion.

Director of Grassroots Sports Development and leader of the NSC delegation, Amaka Ashiofu, noted that hosting rights are designed to spur sports infrastructure development. She explained that the inspection was aimed at identifying areas for upgrade and assured that the commission would collaborate closely with Lagos to ensure a seamless process.

The next edition of the National Youth Games will hold in Delta State from August 26 to September 6, after which Lagos will take over as host in 2026.

Governor Diri, represented by his deputy, Peter Akpe, announced the dethronement during a stakeholder meeting at the Government House in Yenagoa on Tuesday. The Governor justified the action under Section Six of the state’s Chieftaincy Law, which emphasizes the necessity of maintaining peace, order, and good governance.

The removal was prompted by findings from a government-appointed fact-finding committee, which consulted with security agencies and local stakeholders. According to the Governor, the committee concluded that the community’s leadership was too weak and indecisive to manage the violence and security issues that arose.

Looking forward, Governor Diri has ordered the immediate commencement of a process to elect a new paramount ruler for the community, stipulating that the selection must be concluded within a three-month timeframe.
