AfroBasket 2025 Thriller: D’Tigers Set For Explosive Quarter-Final Battle With Senegal
Nigeria’s D’Tigers will aim to extend their unbeaten streak at the 2025 AfroBasket when they take on Senegal’s Teranga Lions in a quarter-final clash at the Pavilhão Multiusos de Luanda, Angola, at 7 p.m. today.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The West African side, coached by Mohammed Abdulrahman, dominated the group stage with three straight victories to top Group B on maximum points. Nigeria opened with a 77–59 win over Madagascar, stunned defending champions Tunisia 87–66, and sealed their perfect run with a thrilling 99–90 triumph over Cameroon.
Speaking ahead of the highly anticipated contest, Abdulrahman emphasized that his team’s approach is built on pace and defensive intensity. “Our identity is to play good defence and then see if we can run and get a quick and easy basket,” he explained. “We know we are not the biggest team around, but rather than seeing that as a disadvantage, we’ve embraced it as an edge — staying quick on the floor, choking opponents defensively, forcing steals, and pushing the ball in transition.”
Senegal endured a more turbulent path to the last eight. They opened with a dominant 88–53 win over Uganda but fell 91–77 to Egypt before edging Mali 80–70. That result forced them into the qualification playoffs, where they secured their quarter-final berth with a 78–65 win over South Sudan, led by captain Brancou Badio’s outstanding 31-point display.
Nigeria and Senegal share a fierce AfroBasket rivalry, with the Nigerians holding a narrow 5–3 head-to-head edge. However, their most recent meeting ended in disappointment for D’Tigers, as Senegal claimed a 93–87 victory at last year’s Pre-Olympic Qualifiers in Lagos.
For Nigeria, Houston Rockets guard Josh Okogie, co-captains Ike Nwamu and Stan Okoye, and Caleb Agada are expected to play pivotal roles. Okoye, the only remaining member of Nigeria’s 2015 AfroBasket-winning squad, provides crucial experience. Meanwhile, Senegal will rely heavily on the scoring prowess of Badio, alongside playmaker Jean Jacques Boissy and forward Ibrahim Faye, to penetrate Nigeria’s defence.
