  • The probe focuses on approximately $2.79 billion released between 2021 and 2023 for maintenance work on refineries in Port Harcourt, Warri, and Kaduna.

  • Allegations include money laundering, procurement fraud, economic sabotage, criminal conspiracy, and abuse of office.

  • The Federal Government had committed significant funds to these projects—$1.56 billion for Port Harcourt, $740.7 million for Kaduna, and $492.3 million for Warri—yet investigators found minimal evidence of actual operational improvements.

  • Officials from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), its subsidiary, refinery managing directors, and major contractors like Daewoo Engineering Nigeria Limited and Tecnimont SPA are currently under scrutiny.

The Shocking Disaster and Frantic Search

  • A Rushed Return: The 38-year-old defender, who plays for the Venezuelan second-division team Club Sport Marítimo La Guaira, was away at a training camp in Caracas when a rare “doublet” earthquake—two major tremors striking just 39 seconds apart—ravaged the region.

  • Reduced to Rubble: Upon hearing the news, Trejo rushed back to his family’s beachfront home in La Guaira, located roughly 18 miles north of the capital, only to find their entire apartment building completely leveled.

  • Three Days of Hope: For three grueling days, Trejo desperately searched through the debris for his loved ones, actively pleading for heavy rescue machinery alongside teammates and fellow Venezuelan athletes like Metropolitanos F.C. player Robert Garcés.

  • A Horrific Scene: Describing the devastation, Trejo’s brother-in-law, Ricardo Ardiles, told CNN Español that the player was “emotionally overwhelmed” by the horrific sight, noting that absolutely nothing of the original structure remained standing.

Heartbreak Confirmed The desperate search ended in profound sorrow on Sunday, June 28, when Club Sport Marítimo La Guaira officially confirmed the passing of Trejo’s wife and children. Sharing a family photograph on social media, the club expressed its deep mourning over the irreparable loss, reassuring the player with the message: “Lucas, you are not alone. Your family at Maritime La Guaira is with you.”

A Nation in Mourning The historic doublet earthquake is reported to be the strongest to strike Venezuela in over a century. Official figures indicate that more than 1,400 people have lost their lives, with thousands of others still missing.

The football community has been hit particularly hard by the natural disaster. In addition to Trejo’s heartbreaking loss, the Venezuelan Football Federation and national team confirmed the death of 18-year-old rising star Yimvert Berroteran. The talented young player had recently represented Venezuela at the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in Doha and was a prominent feature in the Under-20 national setup.
