FG Orders Ibom Air, AON To Drop Sanctions Against Passenger Comfort Emmanson
The Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, has ordered Ibom Air to withdraw its criminal complaint against Comfort Emmanson, an airline passenger accused of unruly behavior. Keyamo said the government had reviewed all incidents and concluded that both passengers and airline personnel had acted improperly. He emphasized that the latest decisions were based on compassion and aimed at restoring fairness while strengthening security protocols in the aviation sector.
On the case involving Ms. Emmanson, the minister confirmed that Ibom Air has agreed to drop its complaint, noting that the passenger displayed remorse when questioned by police in the presence of her lawyer. The Airport Command of the Nigeria Police is expected to process her release from Kirikiri Prisons within the week. In addition, the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) have agreed to lift the lifetime ban earlier imposed on her.
Keyamo also addressed other recent incidents, including the case of music star Wasiu Ayinde Marshall (Kwam 1), whose flight ban will be reduced to one month by the NCAA, alongside the withdrawal of criminal charges. The minister further revealed that the pilots involved in the ValueJet case will have their licenses reinstated after a one-month suspension and mandatory reappraisal.
To prevent future disputes, Keyamo directed all aviation security agencies to hold a retreat next week, in collaboration with other relevant government bodies, to train personnel on handling disruptive passengers and de-escalating tense situations. Airlines will also undergo a separate review to assess staff conduct toward travelers.
Keyamo stressed that the government’s intervention is not politically motivated but a balanced decision designed to improve safety, fairness, and public trust in Nigeria’s aviation industry.
