Sani Warns Peter Obi May Struggle To Keep One-Term Pledge

Published

on

A prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Sani, has expressed skepticism about Peter Obi’s ability to uphold his pledge of serving only one term as Nigeria’s president if elected. Speaking on Tuesday’s edition of Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, Sani suggested that the promise could be difficult for Obi to keep due to pressure from his supporters.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Sani acknowledged that Obi likely intends to honor his one-term commitment. However, he noted that if Obi performs well in office, the demand from both his supporters and the wider Nigerian populace to seek a second term could prove overwhelming.

“Mr. Peter Obi may be sincere in his promise. After I made my comments, many responded—some even saying they would not believe him even if he swore on a shrine,” Sani said. “Others accused him of making empty promises. But the issue isn’t Obi’s integrity; it’s about the influence of his supporters.”

He added, “His supporters may not accept a single term because the Constitution allows for two terms. If his first term is impressive, the call for him to continue will grow. There are many challenges to that promise. While the promise was made, it may not be kept—not because of Obi, but because others may not allow it.”

On the subject of PDP’s presidential candidate for 2027, Sani endorsed former President Goodluck Jonathan as the party’s best option. He highlighted that Jonathan, restricted by constitutional term limits, can only serve one term, which aligns with the PDP’s interests and offers clarity on tenure.

“We’re not considering Jonathan based on promises; the law governs this. He cannot serve beyond one term due to constitutional provisions. Therefore, he can only serve one term and then leave,” Sani concluded.
