Osimhen’s Return To Galatasaray Stirs Buzz Over Mosque Naming Row
According to Nivo News, Galatasaray head coach Okan Buruk has confirmed that Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen will make his highly anticipated return to action on Friday against Karagumruk, despite an ongoing mosque-naming controversy that has stirred debate in Turkey.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Osimhen, who signed for the Istanbul giants from Napoli this summer in a record €75 million transfer, missed last Saturday’s 3-0 victory over Gaziantep. Buruk explained that the decision to leave him out was purely fitness-related, noting that the player had only completed five to six days of training. “Playing during that period could have been risky for him,” Buruk told CNN Turk, adding that the striker himself had agreed to rest and target a gradual return.
The Super Eagles forward joined pre-season later than planned due to prolonged transfer negotiations. However, just days after arriving, he became the subject of an unusual off-field controversy. In Konya’s Karatay district, the Bulut Mosque—completed in 2008—was unexpectedly listed on Google Maps as “Victor Osimhen Mosque.” The change prompted strong objections from worshippers, who demanded the name be restored, arguing the footballer has no ties to the mosque or the city.
“This has been the Bulut Mosque for more than a decade. We are against it being changed to Victor Osimhen. The name is Christian,” one worshipper said. Another congregant questioned the relevance, stressing that Osimhen is neither a Konyaspor player nor linked to the mosque.
Local resident Zeki Yaylacı went further, calling the renaming “an insult to Muslims” and urging tighter controls on online map edits. Authorities believe the change resulted from inaccurate Google Maps modifications, and there is no evidence that Osimhen had any knowledge of or involvement in the incident.
Having scored 37 goals and provided eight assists for Galatasaray last season while on loan, Osimhen has now resumed full training and is set to make his competitive debut as the most expensive signing in Turkish football history.
