Weeks Of Uncertainty End As LASU Reopens Classrooms
According to Nivo News, the Senate of Lagos State University (LASU) has formally ended the institution’s industrial action, clearing the way for the resumption of academic and social activities across its campuses. The development follows the withdrawal of the strike by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) — representing the university’s staff unions — after a meeting with Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, on Thursday, August 7.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In response, LASU’s Senate convened on Monday to adopt the decision to resume operations. A statement issued by the university’s Deputy Registrar and Public Relations Coordinator, Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile, confirmed that all academic and social engagements will recommence on Wednesday, August 13, 2025. Students are permitted to return to their hostels on the Ojo, Ikeja, and Epe campuses from the same day. The 2024/2025 Second Semester Examinations, which were previously suspended, will now commence on Monday, August 18, 2025. Students have been encouraged to return promptly and prepare adequately.
Before the resolution was reached, LASU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, had made an emotional appeal via the university’s official handle, lamenting the “deafening” silence on campus and expressing that it weighed heavily on her heart. She highlighted improvements in staff welfare — including full year-end bonuses, timely salaries and allowances, and promotion opportunities — as signs that “our voices have been heard.” The Vice-Chancellor stressed the importance of unity and the need to safeguard the institution’s reputation.
It will be recalled that LASU’s workforce, comprising both academic and non-academic staff under the Joint Action Committee — which includes the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) — had embarked on an indefinite strike on July 31, 2025. In a letter to the Vice-Chancellor dated the same day, the unions vowed not to return to work until their demands were addressed.
