Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Keyamo downplayed the influence of former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, suggesting he lacks the political reach in northern Nigeria to challenge President Bola Tinubu.
Keyamo argued that unlike the ADC, the APC has firmly established political structures across the northern region. He also maintained that any alliance between Obi and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar would ultimately fail to dent the APC’s electoral dominance.
“They’re not going anywhere demographically,” Keyamo said. “I appreciate the competition—it keeps us on our toes and pushes us to work harder—but the numbers just don’t look promising for them.”
According to him, plans by the ADC to merge the electoral strength of Obi and Atiku in a joint ticket are flawed. “Their strategy is to combine Obi’s and Atiku’s support base to outdo our over eight million votes in 2023. But it won’t work,” he declared.
He explained that three key demographic factors fueled Obi’s performance in the last election: religious sentiment, regional identity, and youth activism. “In 2023, Obi stood out as the only Christian among major contenders, attracting votes on that basis. The South-East also felt marginalized and rallied around him. And finally, the youth—the Obidient movement—backed him as a younger alternative to the older candidates.”
Keyamo stressed that these factors would unravel if Obi is made a running mate to Atiku. “If Obi is not the main candidate, those demographics won’t align behind him again. And even if he’s the flagbearer, he won’t break into the north. Unlike ADC, we have solid ground in the region—governors, structures, and loyal supporters.”
