Math Magic Comes to Ogun! Babcock Researcher Launches Game-Changing Education Centre

Dr. Adetutu Habib, an Economics lecturer and researcher at Babcock University, Ilisan Remo, has donated a learning hub to the Awa-Ijebu community in Ijebu North Local Government Area of Ogun State. In a statement, Dr. Habib—who serves in the university’s Directorate of Research, Innovation and International Cooperation—said the gesture marked the celebration of her recent PhD graduation and fulfilled a long-standing dream of uplifting underserved students with weak math skills.

She explained that the hub offers a safe, nurturing space where children can learn at their own pace, improve numeracy and literacy, and develop sound moral values.

Recounting the journey, Dr. Habib said she was inspired in 2021 to establish the First-2-Nine Teenagers’ Club in Awa-Ijebu, aiming to raise not only academically competent but also emotionally resilient teens.

“In 2023, after a trial run, I distributed about 50 books to the club members,” she said. “While the interest in reading was encouraging, we encountered a problem—about three out of every ten children failed to return the books, and some brought them back damaged.”

Realising the model’s limitations, she launched Math R-aid later that year—an initiative that connected struggling students to volunteer math tutors, with internet data costs covered by Palm Tutors and a sponsorship from Alfred Pop. However, unreliable electricity and poor internet connectivity hampered its sustainability.

Through school visits, mentoring sessions, and math competitions, Dr. Habib discovered that most children had a poor foundation in numeracy, often stemming from limited vocabulary skills.

“It became obvious that video lessons alone weren’t enough,” she said. “Without reinforcing literacy and cultivating a genuine desire to learn, the results would be minimal. That understanding shaped my decision to adopt a more holistic approach.”

While teaching Economics 101 at Babcock, she noticed that nearly 60% of her undergraduate students struggled with basic math—prompting her to create short math videos to reinforce foundational concepts.

Around the same period, her daughter began Grade One, and Dr. Habib realized that most educational videos were created by foreign educators and lacked cultural relatability. “I wanted lessons that felt real—using Nigerian accents and everyday examples familiar to the average child here,” she said.

That desire led her to develop the Times Table Mastery Course during the COVID-19 lockdown. The course has since helped over 2,000 students master multiplication tables. To date, she has produced more than 400 math video lessons spanning primary and secondary school curricula—making math more engaging and relatable for Nigerian learners.

Dr. Habib appealed to philanthropists and corporate organizations to support the learning hub by donating math kits, computers, educational gadgets, books, reading resources, and solar power systems to ensure steady learning access.

According to the source, the twins maintained a daily routine of speaking around midnight, but the conversation took a sudden turn that night when unusual activity was noticed at the General’s end.

He said the line went dead abruptly after the General paused during the call, apparently due to the unfolding situation at the base.

The twin brother reportedly made repeated attempts to reconnect, sending messages and calling continuously, but received no response throughout the night.

“He kept trying until about 4 am, but there was no answer,” the source said.

The family later confirmed the tragedy after a senior military officer contacted them around 6:30 am, informing them that the base had come under attack and that the Brigade Commander was among those killed.

The relative described the incident as devastating, noting that communication had broken down during the assault.

The late General was later buried alongside other fallen soldiers in Maiduguri, Borno State.

He wrote, “Chiemeka Chibuzor’s wedding is hereby suspended. More than a thousand applications. No more wedding pending further directive from me.”

The cleric had earlier this week publicly invited proposals for her marriage, setting conditions that included the suitor being young and in good physical and mental health, alongside promised financial support and housing benefits.

He also said the couple would enjoy lifelong support, including shared property ownership and periodic welfare checks from church members.

The development follows a similar arrangement recently conducted by the church involving a non-verbal autistic man who was married in a ceremony organised by the ministry.
