The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on Thursday hosted members of the Senate Committee on Crude Oil Theft and officials of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, as part of efforts to deepen inter-agency collaboration in tackling oil theft and promoting police accountability.
Led by Senator Ned Nwoko, the Senate delegation held strategic talks with the IGP on curbing crude oil theft across Nigeria’s onshore and offshore locations.
“The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, today, 31st July 2025, received a high-powered delegation from the Senate Committee on Crude Oil Theft led by the Chairman, Senator Ned Nwoko, at the IGP Smart Conference Hall, Force Headquarters, Abuja,” said Force PRO, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in a statement shared via his official X handle.
He noted that the meeting was a strategic move to coordinate efforts in dismantling oil theft networks threatening Nigeria’s economy.
According to the statement, Senator Nwoko emphasized the importance of ending crude oil theft to meet national production targets and stabilize the economy. He acknowledged that achieving this goal would require robust partnership with the Nigeria Police Force.
“The committee cannot deliver on its mandate in isolation,” Nwoko stated. “We need strong collaboration with the Police to tackle the theft of Nigeria’s crude oil.”
In his response, IGP Egbetokun pledged the Police Force’s full support for the committee’s mission and immediately directed senior officers to begin direct engagement with the lawmakers.
“The IGP extended his appreciation to the committee for its dedication to this national priority and reiterated the Police Force’s commitment to fighting crude oil theft, safeguarding critical national assets, and bringing economic saboteurs to justice,” the statement added.
He assured the committee of the Force’s readiness to deploy all necessary resources and mandated the Deputy Inspectors-General of Police overseeing Operations and Force Intelligence to commence collaboration with the Senate panel.
Separately, the IGP also received a delegation from the National Human Rights Commission, led by its Governing Council Chairperson, Dr. Salamatu Husaini Sulaiman, and Executive Secretary, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, OFR, SAN. The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in the areas of human rights protection, police reform, and accountability.
“The visit by the NHRC was aimed at reinforcing joint efforts to uphold human rights, curb violations, and ensure strict compliance with the Human Rights Act,” Adejobi stated.
Dr. Ojukwu praised the IGP for taking disciplinary action against errant officers and for recognising officers who demonstrate professionalism, such as SP Sentome Obi, who was recently named the Police Officer of the Year 2024.
In his remarks, the IGP expressed gratitude for the NHRC’s visit and reaffirmed the Police Force’s commitment to upholding human rights. He highlighted the integration of human rights training across all police training institutions to ensure officers act in line with global best practices.
“Policing must be grounded in respect for human rights,” Egbetokun said. “We reject arbitrary arrests, excessive use of force, and unlawful detention. The Force under my leadership welcomes constructive criticism and public feedback to enhance its performance.”
