Tinubu had departed Nigeria on April 2 for a working visit to Paris. According to official communication, the trip was intended to evaluate the administration’s reform initiatives and to strategize ahead of the President’s upcoming two-year anniversary in office.
However, the President’s prolonged absence has drawn sharp criticism from opposition leaders who cite a spike in violent attacks during his time away. In particular, communities in Benue and Plateau States have suffered deadly assaults, prompting widespread concern.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar called for Tinubu’s immediate return, arguing that the country is in crisis. Atiku’s spokesperson, Paul Ibe, said on April 17: “While Tinubu dines under chandeliers in the land of good governance, the country he governs is spiraling into chaos. Plateau has turned into a killing field — over 100 lives lost in relentless attacks.”
Echoing similar sentiments, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi also urged Tinubu to cut short his foreign visit. Obi said, “Over 150 Nigerians have died due to escalating insecurity during your two-week absence. The situation requires the President’s immediate attention and leadership at home.”
In defense, the Presidency maintained that Tinubu remained actively engaged during his trip. Officials insist the President was in constant communication with top security agencies, issuing directives to address security threats across the nation.
Despite these assurances, public outrage over insecurity continues to build, with many urging the President to demonstrate hands-on leadership amid the crisis.
