Former Lagos State Governor and ex-Minister of Works, Babatunde Fashola, has emphasized the need to preserve the historical identity of Lagos, warning against distortions that could erode societal values. His remarks come as ongoing debates around the renaming of streets in the state continue to stir controversy.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Fashola made the call on Tuesday during the public unveiling of “Discover Lagos State: A History Puzzle Book (Volume 1)”, held at the Civic Centre in Victoria Island, Lagos.

Representing Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the event, Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat echoed the sentiment, praising the Lagos State Records and Archives Bureau (LASRAB) for publishing the book and championing the documentation of the state’s rich history.

Citing examples from the University of Glasgow’s digital archives, Fashola noted that preserved historical records—such as those detailing contributions by its staff and students—have shaped the development of countries across the globe, including Nigeria.

“Glasgow University’s archival records offer fascinating insights into the global impact of its academic community,” Fashola said. “For instance, the university has records of early Nigerian students, including Dr. Isaac Ladipo Oluwole, who enrolled in 1913 and graduated in 1918.”

Fashola noted that Dr. Oluwole returned to Nigeria to become the first African medical officer of health in the Lagos Colony. He pioneered school health initiatives, including inspections and child vaccination, and established Nigeria’s first school of hygiene in Yaba in 1920.

“These records, preserved in Glasgow, now help us understand why a street in Ikeja bears the name ‘Ladipo Oluwole.’ It’s a tribute to a man whose contributions shaped public health in Lagos,” Fashola explained. “This is why I say: let us be careful about renaming streets without understanding their historical significance.”

While refraining from delving into the politics of street renaming, he added pointedly, “I keep my gunpowder dry.”

Reaffirming his message, Fashola stressed, “Today, I restate the importance of preserving our history—names, records, landmarks—not just for nostalgia but as a foundation for building values and identity.”

He commended LASRAB for its work in safeguarding the collective memory of Lagos but called for more government support. “To fulfill its mission as the state’s central historical archive, LASRAB must be properly funded, Mr. Governor.”

In his own remarks, Deputy Governor Hamzat praised the History Puzzle Book as an innovative educational tool that blends learning with cultural preservation, especially for younger generations.

“This initiative is designed to spark curiosity and deepen our pride and understanding as Lagosians,” he said.

Hamzat also lauded Fashola for establishing LASRAB during his tenure as governor. “I remember clearly how he signed an executive order mandating that documentation for every project—be it schools or bridges—be filed not just in ministries but also in LASRAB. It wasn’t just bureaucratic; it was visionary.”

He concluded, “Understanding our history is essential—not just to know who we are, but to ensure we don’t forget where we’ve come from.”

Barely a year after its inauguration in Akwa Ibom State, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has been plunged into a deep factional crisis.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Multiple factions are now locked in a struggle for control of the party, leaving members uncertain about the legitimate leadership structure.

One faction is led by John Akpanudodehe, a former National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), while another is headed by the embattled state chairman, Dick Duke.

Although the leader of a third faction could not be immediately confirmed, findings indicate that another group also exists within the party.

Sources further suggest that the Akpanudodehe-led faction is seeking to remove the current chairman through a recently held congress that has sparked controversy.

In response, Dick Duke convened a stakeholders’ meeting over the weekend, where he rejected the legitimacy of the said congress.

He said the party had formally written to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to distance itself from the exercise, citing a subsisting court order.

According to him, his tenure as state chairman is still valid until May, and any congress conducted before then would be unlawful.

Duke added that the party would only proceed with proper congresses after the expiration of his tenure and the resolution of legal issues, in line with due process.
