Residents Urge Government To Rethink University Locations In Cross River To Promote Balanced Growth
Residents of Cross River State have expressed discontent over the state government’s decision to establish two new higher institutions in the southern senatorial district, which already houses three universities. Anthony Bissong Attah, a key stakeholder in the central senatorial district, criticized the governor’s approval for the establishment of the Cross River State University of Education and Entrepreneurship in Akamkpa and the Cross River State College of Agriculture and Forestry. He highlighted the concentration of tertiary institutions in the southern district, which already hosts the University of Calabar, Cross River State University, and private institution Arthur Jarvis University.
Bissong pointed out that Ikom, the fastest-growing town in the state and a commercial hub, lacks any tertiary institution, urging the government to reconsider and site the new schools in Ikom. He also suggested that local leaders from the central district, including the Secretary to the State Government and Speaker, should have advocated for a university in Ikom to ease pressure on Calabar.
Public commentators drew comparisons with Delta State, where universities and institutions are distributed across different towns, contributing to balanced development. They lamented that Cross River has an overwhelming concentration of educational institutions in Calabar, making it the only developed area in the state.
While some residents support the government’s decision due to logistical and financial reasons, others remain hopeful that the state will eventually allocate resources to properly fund existing institutions before creating new ones

The Allegation: The survivor, Malam Babawo Tudun Nasera—whose 17-year-old brother Salim was among the deceased—stated in a video that authorities wanted the miners to halt operations, but they continued working based on instructions allegedly given by Babangida.
