Nigeria Could Face Blackout As Gas Suppliers Demand ₦3.3 Trillion.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Association of Power Generation Companies, Dr Joy Ogaji, revealed that gas suppliers have threatened to halt supply unless part of the outstanding ₦3.3 trillion owed to them is settled.
Speaking on Fresh FM, Ogaji linked the country’s ongoing power outages to mounting financial obligations within the electricity value chain. She explained that thermal power plants, which depend heavily on gas, are struggling to obtain enough fuel to operate efficiently.
As of Wednesday, Nigeria’s national grid was generating only about 3,334 megawatts of electricity due to insufficient gas supply. Since the country relies predominantly on gas-fired plants, any disruption in gas availability directly impacts electricity generation.
“Gas is not available because suppliers have said that if we need gas, we must pay upfront. We owe them a lot of money,” Ogaji stated.
She also disclosed that the Federal Government’s total debt to power generation companies reached ₦6.8 trillion as of February 2026, growing steadily due to long-standing payment shortfalls.
“From 2015 to December 2024, the debt grew to ₦4 trillion. In 2025, each month saw a shortfall of ₦200 billion, adding ₦2.4 trillion to reach ₦6.4 trillion by December 2025. The debt continued rising in 2026, reaching ₦6.6 trillion in January and ₦6.8 trillion in February. Yes, it is 120% correct to say that the debt is why we are in darkness,” she explained.
In response, the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, confirmed that the Federal Government is addressing the issue in collaboration with the Minister of State for Petroleum (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, according to spokesperson Bolaji Tunji.
Nigeria has faced persistent electricity shortages since December last year, forcing households and businesses to rely heavily on petrol and diesel generators. Rising fuel prices—now over ₦1,100 per litre for petrol and about ₦1,600 for diesel—have further increased the cost of running generators, a situation worsened by global crude oil price hikes amid geopolitical tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.

Speaking at a summit of progressive leaders in Barcelona, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva urged the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council to adopt a new approach and take stronger responsibility for maintaining global peace.
He also criticised U.S. President Donald Trump for his frequent social media posts directed at Iran.

The Osun State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has responded to claims by Governor Ademola Adeleke that local government officials under the party diverted about ₦300 billion meant for workers’ salaries.
Adeleke had made the allegation during a stakeholders’ meeting, accusing APC-controlled council officials of hijacking funds and forcing the state government to shoulder salary payments for local government workers, teachers, health staff, and pensioners for over a year.
He insisted he would not abandon workers, blaming the situation for delays in executing some state projects.
But in a statement, APC’s Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi, dismissed the claims, accusing the governor of misleading the public and shifting blame.
The party alleged that Adeleke was responsible for the salary issues, claiming he refused to release electronic payment vouchers and other financial documents needed for processing payments.
APC also said pension-related records, leave bonuses, cooperative deductions, and other financial data had not been made available despite repeated appeals, insisting that funds were properly accounted for and available for use if approved.
The party urged pensioners and workers to seek clarification, insisting the situation could be resolved if the governor allowed due process to take place.
