Kebbi’s Bold Move: N6.5bn Approved to Transform Learning Environment Statewide

Governor Idris made this known on Monday during the opening ceremony of the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), held in Birnin Kebbi.
He further revealed that the administration had procured educational materials worth N2.7 billion, which will be distributed to students at no cost.
“I am filled with joy today. I thank God for bringing people who value education to Kebbi,” the governor said.
He reaffirmed that Kebbi State operates a free education policy to ensure inclusive access to learning across the state. “We’ve also improved the feeding programme in our boarding schools to ensure students remain in school comfortably,” he added.
In the healthcare sector, Idris disclosed that doctors’ salaries in the state have been adjusted to match federal pay scales — a strategic move to reduce brain drain among medical professionals.
On agriculture, the governor announced that the state had distributed 520 trucks of fertilisers and 10,000 solar-powered water pumps to farmers, all free of charge, to enhance dry season farming.
In his remarks, NUT National President, Mr. Audu Titus-Amba, lauded Governor Idris for his transformative leadership and longstanding contributions to the union. He noted that one of Idris’ enduring legacies was the extension of teachers’ retirement age from 60 to 65 years.
“If not for that extension, I would have retired already. Kebbi made no mistake electing a teacher as governor,” Titus-Amba said, describing Idris’ election as a divine intervention and a blessing to the state.
He commended the governor for elevating six teachers to the rank of Permanent Secretary, and described Kebbi as a “second home” for educators.
Also speaking, the state Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Dr. Halima Bande — represented by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Alhaji Abubakar Magaji-Na-Yelwa — praised the governor’s massive investment in education and urged him to sustain the momentum for the benefit of future generations.
Earlier, Acting State Chairman of the NUT, Alhaji Usman Koko, also applauded the governor for being a staunch supporter of teachers and education. He noted that Idris has recorded notable achievements in just two years in office.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the NEC meeting was hosted in Kebbi to honour Governor Idris, the immediate past national president of the NUT.
