CHAN 2024 Goes Mega! CAF Announces Record-Breaking Prize as Super Eagles Chase Maiden Crown

Published

on

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a record-breaking total prize pool of $10.4 million for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), marking a bold move to elevate the status and financial value of the continental tournament reserved exclusively for home-based players.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

For the first time in CHAN’s history, the tournament winners will claim a staggering $3.5 million, representing a 75% increase from the $2 million awarded in the previous edition. The runners-up will receive $1.2 million, while third and fourth-placed teams will earn $700,000 and $600,000, respectively.

Quarter-finalists won’t leave empty-handed either, with each receiving $450,000. Even teams that fail to progress past the group stage will benefit: third- and fourth-placed group teams will collect $300,000 and $200,000, while the bottom teams in five-team groups are also guaranteed $200,000 each.

In total, all 19 participating nations will receive financial rewards regardless of their final standing — a major step toward inclusivity and sustainability in African football.

CAF President, Dr. Patrice Motsepe, highlighted the historic increase as part of a broader effort to strengthen the role of locally based players and develop football infrastructure across the continent.

“This increase in prize money will support the development of homegrown talent and enhance the international competitiveness of African football,” Motsepe stated in CAF’s official release.

He further underscored that CHAN remains a strategic tool in CAF’s drive to attract more fans, global broadcasters, and commercial partners to African football.

The 2024 edition — officially titled CAF African Nations Championship Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda 2024 — is scheduled to take place from August 2 to 30, 2025. This will be the first time the tournament is jointly hosted by three countries: Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

Among the 19 qualified teams are defending champions Senegal, former winners Morocco and DR Congo (each with two titles), Algeria, Guinea, Zambia, and notably, Nigeria, who are returning to CHAN after missing the last edition.

The home-based Super Eagles are still in search of their first CHAN title since the competition’s inception in 2009, and the increased prize purse adds extra motivation for a breakthrough performance.

According to the source, the twins maintained a daily routine of speaking around midnight, but the conversation took a sudden turn that night when unusual activity was noticed at the General’s end.

He said the line went dead abruptly after the General paused during the call, apparently due to the unfolding situation at the base.

The twin brother reportedly made repeated attempts to reconnect, sending messages and calling continuously, but received no response throughout the night.

“He kept trying until about 4 am, but there was no answer,” the source said.

The family later confirmed the tragedy after a senior military officer contacted them around 6:30 am, informing them that the base had come under attack and that the Brigade Commander was among those killed.

The relative described the incident as devastating, noting that communication had broken down during the assault.

The late General was later buried alongside other fallen soldiers in Maiduguri, Borno State.

He wrote, “Chiemeka Chibuzor’s wedding is hereby suspended. More than a thousand applications. No more wedding pending further directive from me.”

The cleric had earlier this week publicly invited proposals for her marriage, setting conditions that included the suitor being young and in good physical and mental health, alongside promised financial support and housing benefits.

He also said the couple would enjoy lifelong support, including shared property ownership and periodic welfare checks from church members.

The development follows a similar arrangement recently conducted by the church involving a non-verbal autistic man who was married in a ceremony organised by the ministry.
