Ondo Takes Center Stage in Constitutional Review, Demands Bigger Share of National Wealth
Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has renewed calls for a comprehensive review of Nigeria’s revenue allocation formula, describing the current structure as unfairly tilted in favour of the Federal Government.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking on Friday in Akure during the South‑West Centre B public hearing of the House of Representatives Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), Aiyedatiwa also advocated a return to true federalism that mirrors the socio‑political, cultural, and economic realities of the federating units.
“Ondo State aligns with the progressive aspirations of the South‑West in pushing for genuine federalism—one that allows states to control their resources and remit about 40 per cent to the centre,” the governor said.
According to him, a fairer revenue formula would see not less than 50 per cent of national revenue retained by the states, ensuring equity, justice, and sustainable development. He added that the public hearing offered a rare chance to re‑examine the governance framework, identify necessary reforms, and amend laws to strengthen stability, security, and national growth.
Also addressing the committee, the Commandant‑General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Ahmed Audi, urged the National Assembly to grant the corps full constitutional recognition in line with its mandate to protect lives and property. Represented by Commandant Hammed Abodunrin, Audi lamented that Section 214 of the 1999 Constitution—stating that “there shall be only one police force in the country”—has been repeatedly misinterpreted, fuelling friction between the NSCDC and the Nigeria Police Force.
He further explained that the appointment of a retired police officer as the corps’ pioneer acting commandant had also created misconceptions about its role and independence.
In a related submission, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) called for constitutional safeguards for media professionals and the establishment of a media bailout fund to support struggling independent outlets nationwide.
NUJ National President, Alhassan Abdullahi—represented by the Ondo State NUJ Chairman, Leke Adegbite—stressed that press freedom, journalist safety, and the economic viability of media houses are not just industry matters but critical national issues.
“Journalism is a cornerstone of democracy and transparency,” Abdullahi said. “Threats to the safety of journalists and the survival of independent media outlets undermine good governance and social cohesion.”

Atiku Opens Up On ADC 2027 Game Plan, Says Consensus Candidate Comes First.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said the African Democratic Congress (ADC) will first pursue a consensus arrangement before considering a primary election for its 2027 presidential ticket.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Atiku made this known during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday while discussing the party’s leadership and strategy ahead of the next general election.
He said he is open to backing a consensus candidate if that becomes the party’s collective decision, stressing that such support should not be interpreted as stepping aside.
“It is not about stepping aside, but whether I am willing to support, and yes, I will,” Atiku said.
According to him, the ADC’s first priority is to build internal unity and reach an agreement among stakeholders before considering a competitive primary process.
“Our first option will be to work out a consensus. If that doesn’t happen, then of course we will explore other options. And yes, I will support whoever eventually emerges,” he stated.
Atiku also expressed confidence in the political experience within the party, saying he believes a consensus is achievable and may make a full-scale primary contest unnecessary.
“That remains our preferred path. We will go for primaries if consensus fails, but I honestly do not expect it to get to that stage because we are dealing with mature and experienced politicians,” he added.
His comments come amid growing political consultations and coalition talks as parties begin to position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
