Femi Adesina Under Fire as NMA Brands His Healthcare Statement ‘An Affront to Every Doctor
The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has strongly criticised former presidential spokesperson Femi Adesina over his recent remarks on the nation’s healthcare system.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Adesina, in a televised interview, had suggested that late former President Muhammadu Buhari might have died much earlier if he had not sought medical treatment abroad, arguing that Nigeria’s health facilities lacked the equipment and expertise to manage his condition, hence the decision to fly him to London.
Reacting in an interview with Daily Post, the Chairman of the NMA in Rivers State, Dr. Diamond Tamunokuro, described Adesina’s comments as deeply insulting to millions of Nigerians who rely on the same system for everything from primary care to advanced treatment.
According to Tamunokuro, such a statement only underscores the failure of the very administration Adesina served in.
“It’s an insult to well‑meaning Nigerians to hear such comments from politicians and their appointees,” he said.
“There are people in this country who receive care from the same health system Mr. Adesina disparaged, and they have lived even longer than the late president.”
He stressed that if Adesina’s claim is true, then it is a clear admission that his administration failed woefully in developing the health sector.
Tamunokuro urged citizens to hold leaders accountable and demand to know whether they are genuinely committed to improving the nation or merely enriching themselves:
“Nigerians should rise up and begin to ask politicians whether they truly mean well for the country or are simply feeding fat on public resources.”
The NMA boss further commended Nigerian doctors for their daily sacrifices to keep the health sector running despite daunting challenges.
He noted that instead of constantly seeking treatment abroad, leaders should commit resources to strengthening local hospitals and creating an environment where quality healthcare can thrive:
“Doctors in Rivers State and across Nigeria are working hard every day to improve healthcare delivery. The scope and quality of care are expanding, and Nigerians are living better lives because of these efforts,” Tamunokuro said.
“What we need from government is the right environment and investment in our healthcare infrastructure. Rather than running overseas for treatment, politicians should invest at home and watch the system grow.”
He concluded by urging Nigerians to demand clear plans from politicians regarding the kind of healthcare services they intend to provide for citizens.
