2027 Tensions Soar as ADC Labels APC’s ‘No Vacancy’ Talk Dangerous and Undemocratic

Published

on

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly condemned the All Progressives Congress (APC) for declaring that there would be “no vacancy in Aso Rock” in 2027, describing the comment as arrogant, dismissive, and an affront to millions of Nigerians battling hunger, insecurity, and joblessness.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a statement issued Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC stressed that the Nigerian presidency is not a hereditary right, but a democratic office that must be earned through credible performance and revalidated at the ballot box.

The reaction follows remarks by APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, who on Tuesday told party members at the APC national headquarters in Abuja that there would be “no vacancy” in the presidency come 2027 — a statement widely interpreted as a nod to President Bola Tinubu’s bid for re-election.

The ADC, however, warned that such statements risk reinforcing public fears that electoral outcomes are predetermined and citizens’ votes may be rendered meaningless.

“The APC Chairman’s proclamation is not only presumptuous, it is deeply disrespectful to Nigerians who are weary of hunger, insecurity, unemployment, and the failure of promises,” the ADC said. “The idea that there is ‘no vacancy’ at the Villa is an insult to democracy itself. The presidency is not reserved for anyone — it must be contested and earned.”

The party added that the APC’s fear of electoral defeat is becoming evident, warning that no incumbent is above the democratic requirement of renewing their mandate through performance and accountability.

“In 2027, no matter what the APC thinks, there will be a vacancy in Aso Rock. President Tinubu must reapply to Nigerians, and justify why he deserves a second term — despite policies that have impoverished the majority,” Abdullahi stated.

According to the ADC, the electorate will evaluate the APC administration based on measurable indicators: youth employment, food security, power supply, justice, and public safety.

It also dismissed ongoing self-congratulatory narratives pushed by APC supporters and media allies, pointing out that the reality on the ground tells a different story.

“While the APC claps for itself and hands out medals of excellence, the cost of food keeps soaring, bandits terrorize communities unchecked, and the naira remains in a free fall,” the statement continued. “To talk of ‘no vacancy’ two years ahead of the election is to spit on the hopes of Nigerians — the mothers who can’t feed their children, the graduates who can’t find work, and the entrepreneurs whose businesses are collapsing.”

The ADC concluded with a warning: “The APC will have to reapply for the job of governing Nigeria. And no, they don’t get to grade themselves.”
