President Bola Ahmed Tinubu returned to Abuja in the early hours of Sunday following a fifteen-day diplomatic mission to Saint Lucia and Brazil that aimed to deepen Nigeria’s global alliances and assert its role in multilateral engagements.
According to NIVONEWS, the President’s aircraft landed at approximately 1:30 a.m. at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, where he was received by key government officials and senior members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Welcoming him back were National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Minister of Budget and Economic Planning Abubakar Bagudu, Minister of State for Defence Bello Matawalle, Senator Aliyu Wamakko, Minister of State for Works Muhammad Goronyo, and Senior Special Assistant to the President on Political and Other Matters Kabiru Masari, alongside top military and security personnel.
President Tinubu had departed Nigeria on Saturday, June 28, embarking on what was described as a strategic diplomatic outreach to territories historically underrepresented in Nigeria’s foreign policy focus. According to NIVONEWS, his first stop was Saint Lucia, where he engaged with leaders of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), emphasizing Nigeria’s renewed commitment to South-South cooperation and intercontinental diplomacy.
The President then traveled to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to attend the 17th BRICS Summit as a special guest and partner-nation representative. Upon his arrival, Tinubu held a crucial bilateral meeting with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Together, they co-chaired the Nigeria–Brazil high-level bilateral session, which focused on enhancing trade, infrastructure development, and cultural ties between the two nations.
According to NIVONEWS, President Tinubu’s keynote address on the opening day of the BRICS Summit underscored his administration’s global vision. He called for a sweeping overhaul of international governance systems—including financial institutions and healthcare mechanisms—to promote inclusivity and fairness for developing nations, particularly in Africa. He further advocated for sustainable technology transfer and more accessible financing models to empower emerging economies to thrive within global frameworks.
