Unexpected Praise: Trump Hails Boakai’s Speech, Asks About His Language Skills
U.S. President Donald Trump stirred conversation on Wednesday during a White House luncheon with African leaders after complimenting Liberian President Joseph Boakai on his command of English.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The remark came during a diplomatic event focused on strengthening ties between the United States and Africa. After President Boakai delivered his remarks, Trump leaned in and asked, “Thank you, and such good English… Where did you learn to speak so beautifully? Where were you educated?”
President Boakai, a veteran statesman and business graduate, replied modestly that he received his education in Liberia. Like most Liberians, Boakai speaks English as his first language—a legacy of the country’s historical ties with the United States. His reserved response, delivered away from the microphones, reflected a sense of unease at the question.
Unbothered, Trump went on to say, “It’s beautiful English. I have people at this table who can’t speak nearly as well,” a comment that drew a mix of laughter and visible discomfort among attendees, including several Francophone West African leaders.
Liberia, founded in the 19th century by formerly enslaved African Americans repatriated by the American Colonization Society, declared independence in 1847. Its political system was modelled after the U.S., with English established as the official language.
Though Liberia is home to numerous indigenous languages such as Kpelle, Mende, and Kissi, English remains the primary language of education and governance. President Boakai, fluent in English and several local dialects, primarily conducts official duties in English.
