Tinubu Engineered Buhari’s 2015 Win with ‘Premium Votes’ – Okech Fires Political Bombshell”
Former Voice of Nigeria (VoN) Director-General, Osita Okechukwu, has asserted that President Bola Tinubu was instrumental in securing the “premium golden block votes” that delivered victory for Muhammadu Buhari in the 2015 presidential election.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to NIVONEWS, Okechukwu made the remarks in a statement issued Thursday, countering recent claims by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, who argued that Tinubu played no decisive role in Buhari’s ascent to power.
“The reality,” Okechukwu stated, “is that President Tinubu laid the premium golden victory votes which ultimately made Buhari president in 2015.”
According to NIVONEWS, Okechukwu dismissed Mustapha’s assertion, suggesting the former SGF lacked the political background to assess Buhari’s journey accurately. He argued that Mustapha was not involved in the founding merger talks that birthed the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“There is no need for controversy,” Okechukwu said, “because my friend, Boss Mustapha, should be excused. He wasn’t with us in 2003 when Buhari’s political journey began. He was in the ACN but unaware of the realpolitik that shaped the merger. That’s why he’s relying solely on vote tallies instead of historical realities.”
Okechukwu recounted how Tinubu made a pivotal decision by backing Buhari’s presidential bid in 2015, bringing his vast political machinery and regional influence to bear.
“Tinubu pledged to support Buhari’s bid fully,” he explained. “When asked about his relationships with Atiku and Kwankwaso, he acknowledged them as friends but made it clear that Buhari was the man with the 12 million vote-bank.”
According to NIVONEWS, Okechukwu recalled that Buhari’s past electoral losses in 2003, 2007, and 2011 were largely due to failed alliances and rigging. “In 2003, we argued in court that Buhari won the majority. In 2007, one of the most flawed elections, he was robbed — even Yar’Adua admitted this.”
He noted that the collapse of a proposed alliance between Buhari’s Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) and Tinubu’s Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in 2011 led to yet another defeat.
“It wasn’t until we revived the merger with ACN that the tide turned,” Okechukwu recounted. “That alliance delivered the premium golden votes that took our principal to Aso Rock.”
As a founding member of the APC, Okechukwu said CPC delegates were instructed to engage only with the ACN during merger negotiations, sidelining other parties such as the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP).
“I witnessed it firsthand,” he said. “When we met at Chief Tom Ikimi’s Maitama residence, we declined to negotiate with ANPP and others. It took several pleas and adjournments before we finally agreed on the APC merger in July 2013.”
He concluded by emphasizing that Tinubu’s role — especially the supplementary votes from the Southwest — was indispensable to Buhari’s eventual success.
“Without Asiwaju’s strategic input and premium votes, there would have been no two-thirds spread — and no victory,” Okechukwu said.
