According to NIVONEWS, the announcement was made on Thursday by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, via his official X handle. He stated that the facility had been sealed immediately after the incident to allow for a thorough investigation into safety compliance and planning approvals.

Wahab noted that the government’s inspection team conducted an on-site assessment and meticulously reviewed all documentation submitted by the mall’s management. “Based on our findings, we have determined that Purple Mall met the safety and planning requirements necessary for operation,” he stated.

According to NIVONEWS, the commissioner explained that the mall’s temporary closure was a precautionary action aimed at ensuring public safety, not a presumption of fault. He emphasized that a separate police investigation into the exact cause of the fatal fall remains ongoing.

The reopening has sparked discussions around safety enforcement and the role of regulatory bodies such as the Lagos State Safety Commission, the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), and the Physical Planning Permit Authority. Wahab reaffirmed the government’s commitment to tightening regulatory oversight and extending condolences to the bereaved family.

According to NIVONEWS, the tragic incident occurred on June 26, 2025, when a young man, who had visited the mall to use the gym, was directed to park on the fifth floor due to suspended valet services for VIP guests. Moments later, his vehicle was found crushed at the ground level, resulting in his death.

The government’s immediate response included sealing the mall and deploying a special investigation team to probe potential violations and structural flaws.
