According to NIVONEWS, the 2024/25 season was plagued by a combination of serious injuries and a sharp dip in form among most defenders, resulting in the team conceding goals with alarming frequency. New manager Xabi Alonso has since made overhauling the backline his top priority.

The club has already added center-back Dean Huijsen and right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold—two signings that, despite only playing five matches each so far, have seamlessly slotted into Alonso’s tactical setup and begun to stabilize the defense. However, as NIVONEWS reports, there is still plenty of work ahead, and Real Madrid are now closing in on another key signing to reinforce the squad.

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Los Blancos are finalizing a deal to sign Spanish full-back Álvaro Carreras from Benfica. Negotiations have been ongoing for weeks, primarily stalled by Benfica’s insistence on Carreras’ full €50 million release clause. Real Madrid, reluctant to pay the amount outright, have now reportedly reached a compromise. According to NIVONEWS, the agreement involves paying the release clause in structured installments, while also sending promising Castilla left-back Rafael Obrador to Benfica as part of the deal.

Carreras, a Real Madrid academy product who departed in 2020 for Manchester United, spent time on loan at Preston North End and Granada before joining Benfica in 2024. After an impressive season in Portugal, he caught the attention of his former club, who are now set to bring him back to the Spanish capital.
