Senate to Reps: “We Won’t Joke With Your Bills Anymore!”

The Senate on Tuesday addressed concerns raised by the House of Representatives, clarifying that it has not deliberately delayed concurrence on legislative proposals originating from the lower chamber.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to NIVONEWS, the Senate has reaffirmed its commitment to giving full legislative attention to concurrence bills from the House of Representatives, stating clearly that it does not take such matters lightly. In a statement issued by the Directorate of Media in the office of the Senate Leader, the upper chamber disclosed that it considered no fewer than six concurrence bills from the House just last week.

Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, and Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, made the clarification during Tuesday’s plenary at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja. Their remarks followed recent accusations by the House of Representatives that the Senate had consistently delayed action on bills passed by the lower chamber.

The House, according to NIVONEWS, had gone as far as suspending consideration of Senate-originated bills, alleging that over 140 of its own bills, including many sponsored by Speaker Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, had been stalled without valid justification.

In response, Akpabio strongly rejected the claims, insisting that the Senate “cannot joke with concurrence bills from the House of Representatives” and remains committed to legislative cooperation. “It takes two hands to clap,” he said. “We’ve been working on these bills, and we will continue to do so in the best interest of Nigeria and its citizens.”

While presenting one such bill at the plenary, Bamidele also emphasized the Senate’s diligence. “The first two items on our agenda today are concurrence bills from the House,” he noted. He added that, although both chambers operate on the principle of reciprocity, due diligence must be exercised on every piece of legislation. “We are not operating a rubber-stamp system,” he said.

According to NIVONEWS, Bamidele stressed that just last week, six concurrence bills were passed by the Senate, reaffirming the chamber’s constitutional mandate to thoroughly vet legislation. “We remain guided by our duty to the Nigerian people,” he said. “We’ll continue to review and process House bills in line with constitutional expectations.”

Meanwhile, the Senate has begun working on a new amendment bill that seeks to introduce clearer and stricter disciplinary measures for erring lawmakers. This comes on the heels of a recent court ruling which questioned the legality of the Senate’s six-month suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

Sponsored by Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan (Borno Central), the bill—titled ‘Retightening Disciplinary Measures against Erring Members and Other Related Matters’—aims to address the gaps in the Legislative Houses (Powers and Privileges) Act by specifying appropriate durations and penalties. It passed first reading on Tuesday and is expected to be debated in plenary on Wednesday.

Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court had ruled that the disciplinary action against Senator Natasha lacked a clear legal basis, urging the Senate to recall her. The proposed amendment is expected to formalize disciplinary protocols going forward.

The legal firm Ogbeide Associates, representing a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has submitted a petition to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Tunji Disu, requesting a formal investigation into PDP secretary Samuel Anyanwu and factional National Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Key aspects of the petition include:

  • Allegations of False Representation: The petition challenges a November 3, 2025, letter sent to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) which falsely claimed that the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) had replaced acting national chairman Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum with Mohammed.

  • Contradictory NWC Records: Petitioners assert that the NWC’s November 1, 2025, emergency meeting actually resulted in the suspension of Anyanwu and three other officers due to alleged anti-party activities, and no record exists to support the claim that Damagum was suspended or Mohammed appointed.

  • Legal Precedents: The lawyers referenced an October 10, 2024, Federal High Court judgment that recognizes Damagum as the acting national chairman and prohibits INEC from accepting documents without his signature. Furthermore, they noted that the Court of Appeal upheld the NWC’s suspension of Anyanwu on March 9, 2026.

  • Call for Institutional Review: The petitioners have requested that the IGP investigate how INEC processed the contested November 3 letter despite being aware of the existing court orders and the NWC’s official resolutions.

  • Stated Objective: Counsel for the petitioner emphasized that the action is intended to address the integrity of public institutions and prevent the use of misleading internal party documentation, noting their readiness to provide supporting court judgments and party records to the police.
