One Nation, One Crisis: 31.7 Million Pupils, Just 915,000 Teachers – Who’s Teaching Nigeria’s Future?

This severe shortfall comes amid worsening working conditions and wage disputes faced by teachers in several states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Recently, teachers in the FCT embarked on an industrial action to protest the failure of area councils to implement the new minimum wage approved by President Bola Tinubu in 2023.
In a 2024 report, The PUNCH revealed that 18 states across the federation failed to recruit a single teacher between 2019 and 2024, further compounding the crisis.
The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) has also expressed alarm over the growing shortage of qualified teachers, particularly in underserved rural communities, which deepens educational inequality.
Former TRCN Registrar, Prof. Josiah Ajiboye, noted that Nigeria’s increasing population of school-age children and the proliferation of schools—both public and private—have created a complex challenge for the education system.
“The availability and quality of qualified teachers are critical to delivering quality education. However, the current shortage is a major concern,” he said.
Ajiboye explained that the failure to recruit new teachers amid rising enrolment had skewed the teacher-pupil ratio, leaving many classrooms overcrowded and under-resourced.
UBEC data shows Nigeria has at least 131,377 primary schools, evenly split between public (65,529) and private (65,848) institutions. While public schools accommodate 24.2 million pupils, private schools serve about 7.4 million.
Titus Amba, President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), described the situation as a “manpower crisis” that fosters widespread learning poverty.
“In some rural schools, just one or two teachers are left to manage an entire school,” he said. “This leaves pupils with little or no chance at quality education and a very bleak future.”
He called on the federal, state, and local governments to urgently invest in teacher recruitment, training, and support, insisting that every child deserves access to a qualified, motivated teacher to ensure sustainable national development.
