Climate Betrayal Ends Now – Tinubu Calls for Radical BRICS Reform on Finance & Justice

President Bola Tinubu has called for a more equitable global system in the areas of climate action, finance, and healthcare, urging BRICS nations to lead efforts that promote inclusive development and justice for emerging economies.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking at the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Tinubu said Nigeria was committed to advancing sustainable development through bold reforms in renewable energy, environmental protection, and universal healthcare, while aligning its national policies with global development goals.

In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu outlined Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to integrate climate action into governance, adopt nature-based solutions, strengthen urban resilience, and champion South-South cooperation.

“We are accelerating our adoption of renewable energy, embedding climate priorities into our national framework, promoting nature-based solutions, boosting urban resilience, and pushing for universal health coverage,” Tinubu said.

He called for urgent reforms of the global financial and healthcare systems, stressing the need for fairness and inclusivity for low-income and developing nations—especially in Africa.

Tinubu noted that while Africa has contributed the least to global emissions, it suffers the most from climate-related disasters, environmental degradation, and healthcare inequalities—challenges that continue to hinder its development.

“Nigeria aligns with the BRICS agenda for fair and equitable global development,” he said. “It is time to reevaluate the global governance architecture and create a more balanced structure that addresses shared concerns—particularly those of developing nations.”

Nigeria was formally admitted as a BRICS partner country in January 2025, alongside Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan, following the creation of the partner-country category at the 16th Summit in Kazan.

Speaking at the summit hosted by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Tinubu reiterated Nigeria’s support for financial restructuring, debt relief, sustainable technology transfer, and improved access to climate finance.

He highlighted Africa’s proactive initiatives such as the African Carbon Market Initiative and the Great Green Wall, and expressed hope that COP-30 would drive global consensus on environmental sustainability.

Reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to South-South cooperation and active participation in global affairs, Tinubu said the continent must not remain a passive observer in discussions around financial justice, climate change, or health equity.

“With 70 percent of Nigeria’s population under 30, we must be deliberate about building a future that reflects their aspirations. Nigeria remains committed to Vision 2050 and our nationally determined contributions under the Paris Agreement,” he said.

Tinubu also emphasized the importance of tackling non-communicable diseases, calling for a unified approach to global health reform.

“As we approach COP-30, BRICS must be more than a bloc of emerging economies. It must become a platform for emerging solutions—driven by solidarity, sustainability, and shared prosperity,” Tinubu declared.

He was accompanied at the summit by Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Tuggar and Minister of Finance Wale Edun.

Announcing Nigeria’s inclusion in BRICS earlier in the year, Brazil noted that Nigeria’s large population and growing economy made it a key player in advancing South-South cooperation and reforming global institutions—both top priorities for Brazil’s BRICS presidency.
