Speaking through Vice President Kashim Shettima at the grand finale of the Nigerian Army Day Celebration, held at Murtala Muhammed Square in Kaduna, Tinubu described Nigeria’s security challenges as existential, noting that the nation has a responsibility to adequately equip and support those who defend it.
He reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to the welfare and operational efficiency of the armed forces, pledging continued investment in modern weaponry, intelligence, and training to ensure troops remain combat-ready.
“The strength of any nation lies in the courage of those who defend it,” Tinubu stated. “For over 162 years, the Nigerian Army has remained the backbone of our sovereignty, shaping our national journey. We have no other country but Nigeria, and we must not trade its future for discord or complacency.”
He praised the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, for his visionary leadership and commitment to professionalism, applauding the military’s dedication and sacrifices.
Reinforcing his message, Tinubu said: “To our gallant men and women in uniform, I restate my total commitment to your well-being and capabilities. Equipping you is not a favour—it is a duty. We will continue to invest in the tools and human capital you need to keep our country safe.”
Lauding this year’s Army Day theme, “Developing the Soldier First Concept: Imperative for Nigerian Army’s Transformation Drive,” the president emphasized that soldier-centric reforms were crucial to national security. “There can be no great army without strong soldiers. Their morale, welfare, and sense of mission must come first,” he declared.
Tinubu hailed Nigerian troops for upholding the country’s flag in global peacekeeping efforts and for their principled stand against threats at home. “Today, we honour not just the fallen, but those who continue to defend our democracy and stand firm against forces of chaos.”
He acknowledged the pressing threats of terrorism, insurgency, banditry, and separatism—not just as security issues, but as direct challenges to the nation’s existence. He called for a united, resolute military response, insisting, “These evils do not discriminate by tribe or faith. They burn churches and mosques alike. Our fight must be firm, united, and unyielding.”
“To every Nigerian soldier, I say: the time is now. You have my full backing and that of the Nigerian people to decisively confront and defeat all agents of terror. I believe in your strength and your will to prevail.”
Reflecting on the sacrifices of fallen heroes, Tinubu paid heartfelt tribute, noting that some now rest “beneath the soil of a grateful nation,” while others bear visible wounds of battle. He extended condolences to their families and pledged that their sacrifices would never be forgotten.
“To those still in active service, continue to serve with dignity, guided by the Constitution and principles of justice. Your courage must be grounded in discipline and honour,” he said.
He also applauded all stakeholders working to uphold national peace and security, stressing that building the nation is a collective responsibility. “Nation-building is not the military’s burden alone. It is a shared duty for all citizens, leaders, and institutions.”
Earlier, Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede remarked on the Nigerian Army’s evolution over the past 160 years, noting its resilience, modernisation, and growing capabilities. He highlighted the professionalism and commitment of officers in defending national integrity.
Oluyede urged field commanders to embrace bold, innovative approaches in every operation, stating, “We may not know what the future holds, but we are sure of our capabilities today. That confidence must drive our preparedness for tomorrow.”
He also urged Nigerians to understand the purpose of military deployments, saying, “Our presence is to protect, not oppress.”
Oluyede expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his unwavering support, adding that the president’s presence at the event, even through representation, signified strong endorsement of the military’s role and efforts.
The event was graced by dignitaries including former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon; Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani; Minister of Defence Mohammed Abubakar; Minister of State for Defence Bello Matawalle; Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa; service chiefs; lawmakers; traditional rulers
