President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, has decried the gruesome killing of Bright Nda Owhor, a young legal practitioner reportedly murdered in Port Harcourt on July 5, 2025.

In a statement posted via his official X handle on Sunday, Osigwe described the incident as “senseless and brutal,” demanding swift justice for the slain lawyer.

“Bright Nda Owhor was a brilliant and promising member of the legal profession whose life was tragically cut short in a most cruel and unjustifiable manner. His death is not only a devastating blow to his loved ones and colleagues but also a disturbing reflection of the worsening insecurity in our country,” he said.

Condemning the killing in the strongest terms, Osigwe stressed that such violence has no place in a law-abiding society.

“No nation governed by the rule of law can continue to tolerate this level of impunity. The right to life is sacrosanct, and its violation in such a heinous fashion is completely unacceptable,” he added.

He called on the Inspector-General of Police, the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, and other security agencies to launch a thorough investigation and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

“We insist that the perpetrators be identified, apprehended, and prosecuted without delay. Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done—and urgently too,” he declared.

Osigwe further expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation across Nigeria, warning that legal professionals are increasingly at risk.

“Lawyers cannot continue to render service to society while operating under the constant threat of violence or death. The authorities must act decisively to restore safety and uphold the sanctity of human life,” he said.

The NBA extended heartfelt condolences to Owhor’s family, the Port Harcourt branch of the NBA, and the broader legal community, promising to ensure the matter is pursued to its conclusion.

“We will not relent until justice is served. The Nigerian Bar Association stands firmly with the family of our fallen colleague,” Osigwe affirmed.
