Recruitment into the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) has surged to its highest level in a decade, with over 6,700 new enlistees joining in the past year, Global News reports. This figure marks a 55 percent increase compared to the previous year and surpasses the government’s target by more than 200 recruits, according to data obtained from the Department of National Defence.
The significant boost in enlistment follows a wave of recruitment reforms designed to modernize the process and attract a new generation of military personnel.
“These improvements will help us continue drawing in talented Canadians for years to come, ensuring a strong and responsive military that can address both current and future security challenges,” said General Jennie Carignan, Chief of the Defence Staff.
Streamlining Recruitment
The Canadian government has introduced major updates to streamline the recruitment process, reduce delays, and better align with the expectations of modern recruits.
Among the key changes is a probationary period that allows individuals to begin training while their background checks, including security and medical evaluations, are still underway. Recruits who fail to meet the required standards during this time will be released from the program.
Additionally, the traditional Canadian Forces Aptitude Test has been replaced by the Scored Employment Application Form—a more holistic assessment tool that evaluates education, experience, and skillsets to improve candidate selection and speed up processing.
To further enhance accessibility, the CAF is digitizing its application systems and updating medical entry standards, allowing all medically fit applicants to participate in basic training.
Strengthening Canada’s Defense Posture
These recruitment reforms align with Ottawa’s broader strategy to bolster national defense capabilities. Just last month, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada would meet NATO’s defense spending benchmark of 2 percent of GDP this year, signaling a renewed focus on military readiness and sovereignty protection.
The recent enlistment numbers reflect growing confidence in the military’s modernization drive and Ottawa’s commitment to securing the nation’s defense infrastructure.
