Public Showmanship!” – Abati Mocks Wike’s Church Thanksgiving for FCT Achievements

According to Naija News, the event took place at St. James Anglican Church in Asokoro, Abuja, on Sunday, July 6.
Reacting to the event, Abati described the thanksgiving as an act of self-glorification rather than a genuine expression of gratitude. He argued that Wike had turned what should have been a public service gesture into a personal celebration.
Abati questioned the appropriateness of using a religious setting to showcase achievements carried out in public office, noting that the Constitution prohibits the state from adopting any religion.
“Let’s address the issue of hosting a thanksgiving service because the Minister of the FCT completed some projects and spent about 11 days commissioning them—with the President in attendance—and then proceeded to a church service,” Abati said.
“But he didn’t go there for worship; he went there to self-congratulate, to bask in personal adulation. I find that immature and unnecessary.”
He went on: “Section 10 of the Nigerian Constitution clearly states that there shall be no state religion. So, for Wike to use a church for what is essentially a state function is a violation of that principle. He wasn’t there as a private citizen but as a government official, bringing along the full weight of the FCT administration.”
Abati also called out the clergy, insisting that religious institutions should not allow political officeholders to misuse sacred spaces for self-promotion.
“Churches like St. James must take a stand. Regardless of how much money or influence a public official wields, certain things are unacceptable. Perhaps the priest should be handed a copy of the Nigerian Constitution to understand where to draw the line between faith and governance,” he concluded.
