NIPOST Fights Back: Denies Drug Trafficking Allegation, Blames Rogue Courier Operators

This clarification follows a recent online report alleging that NIPOST had been exploited as a conduit for drug peddling.
In a statement released on Sunday in Abuja, NIPOST’s Director of Corporate Communications, Franklin Alao, dismissed the claim as entirely false and unfounded.
“There is absolutely no truth to these allegations. NIPOST collaborates closely with key security agencies and logistics partners — including the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the Nigeria Police Force, and the Nigeria Customs Service — to prevent the misuse of logistics channels for criminal purposes,” Alao stated.
He warned that any courier service found to be complicit in illegal activities would face immediate regulatory action.
“Operators involved in criminal acts will face swift sanctions, which include suspension or revocation of licences and prosecution through the appropriate law enforcement channels,” he added.
The response comes in the wake of a report by PUNCH Online quoting Oludotun Sounde, General Manager of NIPOST’s Courier and Logistics Regulatory Department in Ondo State, who had raised alarm over the growing menace of unlicensed courier operators.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ forum in Akure, Sounde described NIPOST as a vital component of national infrastructure that facilitates secure communication and community connectivity. He warned that the unchecked activities of illegal logistics companies posed significant threats to national security and economic stability.
Reiterating NIPOST’s stance, Alao urged the public to ignore the false reports and only use authorised, licensed courier services. He also appealed to media organisations and civil society groups to help raise public awareness and encourage accountability.
“We urge members of the public to report any suspicious logistics activity to NIPOST or the relevant security agencies. The media and civil society have a duty to shape responsible narratives and drive positive reforms,” he said.
Alao further explained that NIPOST’s technological systems are designed to prevent anonymity in parcel delivery, which helps combat illegal activity.
“Our digital tools — including the Digital Postcode and Parcel Identification System — ensure every package is traceable from sender to recipient. These systems enhance screening processes and serve as a deterrent to anonymous or illicit parcel transport,” Alao concluded.
