New Era in Benue Education! Alia Names Trailblazing VC for Freshly Established Varsity

Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has approved the appointment of Prof. Msughter Amua as the pioneer Vice Chancellor of the newly established Benue State University of Agriculture, Science and Technology, Ihugh.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The announcement was made in a statement issued on Saturday in Makurdi by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, and shared with members of the press.

According to the statement, Governor Alia also approved the appointments of eight other officials into various key positions.

Johnson Echor has been named Registrar of the new university, while James Ormye and Demekaa Umbur will serve as Bursar and Librarian, respectively.

In addition, the governor appointed Prof. Boniface Ode as Provost of the College of Education, Oju, and Dr. Tyodoo Iyue as Provost of the College of Education, Katsina-Ala.

Other appointees include Mr. Joseph Kwaghgba as Acting Chairman of the Benue Internal Revenue Service (BIRS); Anta Igbaato as Acting General Manager of the Benue State Environmental Sanitation Authority (BENSESA); and Bem Tseem as Acting Executive Secretary of the Teaching Service Board (TSB).

Kula noted that all appointments are effective from July 7, 2025.

Governor Alia has congratulated the appointees and urged them to live up to expectations by carrying out their duties with diligence, integrity, and in alignment with his administration’s vision for a transformed Benue.

“These appointments reflect the governor’s unwavering commitment to repositioning government institutions for greater efficiency, transparency, and service delivery,” Kula added.

He further stated that the appointees were selected based on proven competence, dedication, and integrity.

The current Acting Executive Secretary of the Teaching Service Board and the Acting Chairman of BIRS have been directed to report to the Head of Service for reassignment, while the Acting GM of BENSESA is to report back to the Governor’s Office.

Key points from the testimony of the third prosecution witness, Richard Agulu, a former Zenith Bank employee, include:

  • Cash Deposits: Agulu testified that he deposited billions of naira in cash on behalf of the former CBN chief, with the funds delivered to him by Emefiele’s former personal assistant, Eric Ocheme.

  • Account Handling: According to the witness, the money was either deposited into accounts for Kelvito Integrated Services and Ifeabigo Integrated Services or placed in the bank’s vault, following instructions allegedly relayed through Ocheme.

  • Banking Procedures: Despite the large sums, Agulu maintained that he followed standard banking procedures, noting that some clients were granted verbal waivers by senior officials to deposit large amounts of cash.

  • Refusal to Name Officials: When asked to identify the senior bank officials who provided these verbal waivers, Agulu declined to provide names to avoid getting anyone in trouble.

  • Additional Transactions: Agulu also testified that he supervised a transfer of ₦1.6 billion to MG Properties Limited.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is prosecuting Emefiele on eight counts, including criminal breach of trust, conspiracy, forgery, and unlawful possession of properties allegedly linked to proceeds of crime; Emefiele has entered a plea of not guilty. Eric Ocheme, who was named in the charges, is reported to be at large. Justice Yusuf Halilu has adjourned the trial for continuation on November 3, 4, and 5, 2026.
