Drama Unfolds: FG May Free Nnamdi Kanu Through Negotiation – Umahi Confirms
The Federal Government has indicated its willingness to negotiate the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), but stressed that such a move should not be presented as a condition for political support.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, made this known while speaking with journalists in Lagos on Friday night. He dismissed claims that the South East is demanding Kanu’s release in exchange for its support of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
“Someone asked me about Nnamdi Kanu, and I made it clear that his issue is not a precondition for the South East to support the President. We are open to negotiations regarding his release, but it should not be politicised—especially since the President is not responsible for his detention,” Umahi said.
Commending President Tinubu’s leadership so far, Umahi described him as a “listening leader” and expressed optimism that Kanu’s freedom would be achieved through “divine intervention and dialogue,” rather than political pressure.
“President Tinubu may not be flawless, but he is steering the country in the right direction. Consider the state of the economy when he assumed office. The international community now trusts our reforms, and that’s why we’re receiving support for our projects,” he added.
Umahi also affirmed that the South East is solidly behind Tinubu and would rally behind his re-election bid in 2027. He pointed to numerous ongoing federal infrastructure projects in the region, including road rehabilitation efforts that had been neglected by previous administrations.
Challenging critics of the administration, Umahi said, “Those attacking the President should first show what they themselves have done for the country.”
Addressing allegations of marginalisation in federal appointments, he dismissed such concerns, asserting that President Tinubu has done more for the South East than many previous leaders. He also called for unity among South East political leaders, encouraging collaboration across party lines, and praising even opposition governors in the region for their cooperation with the federal government.
On rumours about his own presidential aspirations, Umahi was unequivocal: “I am not running for president in 2027. My focus is to support my boss, President Tinubu. The APC is our vehicle for progress. The South East now has a voice at the centre—we are not going back to Egypt.”
