At the official launch of the campaign, Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Umar Yusuf, underscored the initiative’s significance in building a safer, healthier environment for present and future generations.

“Our goal is to ensure a secure and livable environment for all,” Yusuf stated. “Climate change has triggered erosion and various environmental challenges across our communities. This symbolic tree-planting drive is a call to action for everyone to embrace environmental responsibility.”

He highlighted the campaign as a testament to the Assembly’s commitment to lead by example and encourage citizens to adopt responsible land and resource management practices.

“Deforestation and environmental degradation are growing concerns,” he continued. “As leaders, we must champion tree planting to restore degraded land and promote ecological stability.”

On the issue of illegal logging, Yusuf pointed out that the state already has laws in place to tackle deforestation and called on the Ministry of Agriculture’s forestry department to step up enforcement efforts.

“These laws empower the forestry department to arrest and prosecute anyone engaged in unauthorized tree felling. We urge the ministry to intensify enforcement to safeguard our forest resources,” he said.

The Speaker also commended the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project for its role in supporting afforestation efforts across the state and empowering farmers with economically viable tree species.

“In many areas, we’re seeing farms grow economic trees. This supports both land restoration and food security. The Kogi State government remains resolute in its commitment to environmental protection and building a more sustainable future,” Yusuf added.

The campaign will be rolled out across all local government areas, with active participation expected from communities, environmental advocacy groups, and government agencies.
