From Watchdog to Predator: Equatorial Guinea’s Ex-Graft Chief Exposed in Sextape Bombshell
The former Director General of Equatorial Guinea’s National Financial Investigation Agency, Baltasar Engonga, is facing an 18-year prison sentence following his appearance before a Malabo court in connection with a high-profile corruption trial.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Engonga, who has been in detention at Black Beach Prison since September 2024, is being prosecuted for embezzlement and financial misconduct. Although not directly linked to the charges, his case has been further tainted by the shocking discovery of over 400 explicit videos found in his office and residence.
During Monday’s hearing, prosecutors outlined an elaborate scheme allegedly orchestrated by Engonga to siphon public funds during his tenure as head of the Directorate General of Insurance and Reinsurance between 2015 and 2020.
According to Le Bled Parle, the national prosecutor has recommended a harsh sentence:
-
Eight years for embezzlement of public funds
-
Four years and five months for illicit enrichment
-
Six years and one day for abuse of office
The prosecution also demanded a fine of over 910 million CFA francs (approximately $1.5 million) and a ban on Engonga holding public office for the duration of his sentence.
The 54-year-old economist is not alone in the dock. Six other former high-ranking officials, including Carmelo Julio Matogo Ndong, Ireneo Mangue Monsuy Afana, and Florentina Iganga Iñandji, are also on trial over what authorities describe as a widespread corruption network.
The trial, which is expected to run for three days, will continue this week with defence lawyers presenting their case.
Meanwhile, Engonga’s reputation has been further damaged by a scandal involving over 400 sextapes reportedly featuring intimate recordings with married women linked to powerful figures in Equatorial Guinea.
Authorities allegedly discovered the recordings on CDs during a surprise search of Engonga’s office and home. The videos reportedly include encounters with his brother’s wife, cousin, the sister of the President, the wife of the Director General of Police, and spouses of more than 20 government ministers.
The scandal has sparked outrage in the country, compounding the fallout from the corruption allegations against one of Equatorial Guinea’s former top financial watchdogs.
