In a powerful show of unity and purpose, the First Ladies Against Cancer (FLAC), a coalition of Nigerian governors’ wives, have declared the fight against cancer a national mission, calling for coordinated action to expand access to early screening, improve post-treatment support, and influence healthcare policy nationwide.
The declaration was made in Lagos during an event marking Cancer Survivors Month, where FLAC empowered 10 cancer survivors and unveiled renewed efforts to change the narrative around cancer in Nigeria. The gathering, held in collaboration with Roche Nigeria and the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT), brought together key players from the health, advocacy, and development sectors. Highlights included a moving book launch and the induction of new members into the Friends of FLAC (FoFLAC) network.
Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu, Chairperson of FLAC and former First Lady of Kebbi State, emphasized that cancer control should be treated as a vital pillar of national development—not just a healthcare issue.
“FLAC has consistently positioned itself as a coalition of care, working across states to change the cancer story in Nigeria,” she said. “Cancer control is beyond a medical issue; it is a nation-building one. Our mission focuses on early detection, awareness, outreach, and survivor support.”
Dr. Bagudu underscored the coalition’s efforts as a symbol of resilience and solidarity, rooted in the belief that every life touched by cancer deserves care, compassion, and hope.
Also speaking at the event, Mrs. Olufunsho Amosun, former First Lady of Ogun State, urged her counterparts to use their influential platforms to shape public health policy and amplify early detection campaigns.
“As First Ladies, we are uniquely positioned to drive advocacy and systemic reform. The burden of cancer must not be carried by survivors and their families alone,” she said.
Adding a continental voice to the conversation, Mrs. Dorothy Nyong’o, First Lady of Kisumu County in Kenya and mother of Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o, emphasized the gendered nature of cancer’s impact and called for greater funding for screening and palliative care.
“More women are affected than men. When women suffer, families suffer. But when women thrive, societies thrive,” she stated, urging leaders to prioritize cancer control across Africa.
One of the most emotional moments of the event came from Ms. Tolulope Popoola, a cancer survivor who shared her story of diagnosis, treatment, and survival. Her testimony, marked by strength and vulnerability, highlighted the importance of emotional support and affordable care.
“Cancer tested every part of me—physically, emotionally, spiritually. But with the right support, I survived. I am living proof that cancer is not a death sentence,” she said.
The empowerment of 10 survivors by FLAC went beyond symbolic assistance; it marked the commissioning of new advocates—individuals who will now carry forward the message of awareness, prevention, and early intervention in their communities.
As the event concluded, FLAC reaffirmed its commitment to expanding outreach, deepening partnerships, and pushing for stronger institutional frameworks to support cancer prevention, treatment, and survivorship across Nigeria.
