Political Earthquake In Kano As Yusuf’s APC Move Shakes NNPP And Kwankwasiyya.
According to Nivo News, the political rift between Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and the national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has widened amid growing indications that the governor is preparing to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In response to reports suggesting Yusuf’s imminent exit from the NNPP, Kwankwaso is said to have opened a loyalty register for political office holders within the party to determine where their allegiance lies. The move coincided with Yusuf’s 63rd birthday celebration in Abuja, which attracted prominent political figures and party leaders, while Kwankwaso reportedly boycotted the event and instead met with NNPP stakeholders and members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement at his residence in Kano.
The developments have reportedly deepened divisions within the NNPP, particularly among its members in the National Assembly. While Yusuf is said to have secured the backing of the Kano State House of Assembly and all local government chairmen in the state, NNPP federal lawmakers from Kano remain split over the proposed defection. Several members of the House of Representatives elected on the NNPP platform have already defected to the APC, while others have publicly opposed the move.
Although Yusuf’s formal defection was initially scheduled to take place earlier in the week, it was postponed by the APC national leadership to allow for further consultations with key stakeholders. Party insiders disclosed that the governor is yet to formally register with the APC at his ward or collect a membership card, as discussions continue behind the scenes.
The planned defection is reportedly part of a broader political strategy aimed at positioning Yusuf for influence within the Kano APC and strengthening his prospects ahead of the 2027 governorship race. Kwankwaso is said to be strongly opposed to the move and is reportedly considering a switch to another political platform in protest. Observers warn that Yusuf’s departure could significantly weaken the Kwankwasiyya Movement and alter the political balance in Kano.
The dispute has also triggered leadership changes within the NNPP in Kano, leading to court actions and intervention by the party’s national secretariat, which rejected some of the changes and dissolved the party’s structures in the state. Meanwhile, the APC is reportedly viewing Yusuf’s anticipated defection as a major political boost that could strip the NNPP of its only governorship seat and strengthen the ruling party’s dominance in Kano ahead of the 2027 general election.

This leadership change comes shortly after the August 15 governorship poll and follows a period of intense scrutiny, with various political actors and civil society organizations having accused the command of bias in handling sensitive political matters leading up to the election.
In light of this, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has tasked the new commissioner with the critical mission of restoring public trust and ensuring strict impartiality in policing across the state as it navigates post-election tensions. During a courtesy visit in Osogbo shortly after Zungura assumed office, Governor Adeleke, in a statement by his spokesperson Olawale Rasheed, urged the new CP to reorganize the command, improve police-community relations, and take decisive steps to correct behaviors that have led to perceptions of partisanship within the force.
“I therefore have specific requests as part of our efforts to consolidate peace and state reconciliation: Let us rebuild public trust in the police. You must make deliberate efforts to remove many areas of current police conduct that paint it as partisan and anti-people,” Governor Adeleke stated.
