Legislative Showdown: Reps Halt Senate Bills Over 146 Delayed House Proposals!

Published

on

The House of Representatives on Wednesday resolved to suspend consideration of all bills transmitted from the Senate for concurrence, citing persistent neglect by the Red Chamber of over 140 House-initiated bills pending Senate action.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

This decision followed a heated debate during plenary, where lawmakers expressed frustration over what they described as the Senate’s pattern of inaction. In a symbolic move, the House stepped down two Senate-sponsored bills, including one seeking to amend the Federal Orthopaedic Hospital Management Act to establish a hospital in Obokun, Osun State, sponsored by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele.

Another bill, seeking to establish the Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences, Egbe, Kogi State, was also dropped after House Leader Julius Ihonvbere moved for its consideration at the Committee of the Whole.

Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda, while seconding the motion for the bill’s second reading, raised strong concerns about the Senate’s lack of reciprocity.

“I reluctantly support this motion. The Senate has consistently failed to treat our bills with the seriousness they deserve,” Chinda said.

Echoing his sentiments, Rep. Awaji-Inombek Abiante (Rivers) said two of his bills had remained with the Senate since early 2024 without any progress—mirroring a similar experience during the 9th Assembly. “We need to find out why our bills are being ignored. If their reasons aren’t compelling, we should reciprocate,” he said.

Rep. Ahmed Jaha (Borno) also backed the protest, calling for a formal agreement between both chambers. “If they won’t act on our bills, we won’t act on theirs. The House is an independent institution and should not be undermined,” he declared.

Speaker Tajudeen Abbas expressed his concern, revealing that 146 House bills are currently pending in the Senate, including more than 10 sponsored by him. “Some of these have been there for over six months without any action. We’re in the dark,” he said.

Chairman of the House Committee on National Security and Intelligence, Rep. Ahmed Satome, proposed that unless the Senate complies within a specified timeframe, concurrence should be presumed granted by default.

While Speaker Abbas appealed for calm, he acknowledged the lawmakers’ frustration and supported a more assertive stance moving forward. “Unless we receive firm assurances from the Senate on addressing these delays, we will no longer proceed with their bills,” he said.

Kwara PDP Protests As Govt Moves To Reopen Robbery Case Against Saraki, Others.

Published

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State has strongly opposed reported moves by the state government to revisit the alleged Offa robbery case involving former Governor Abubakar Bukola Saraki and others.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

reports that the party made its position known during an emergency press conference in Ilorin on Friday, describing the development as politically motivated and unjust.

PDP spokesman, Comrade Olushola Adewara, said the alleged plan to reopen the case amounts to an attempt to politicise a matter that has already been concluded by the courts.

He alleged that the move was targeted at dragging Saraki into a case in which, according to him, legal authorities had previously found no evidence linking him to the incident.

Adewara referenced earlier legal opinions from the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation, which reportedly stated that Saraki was not connected to the robbery case.

The party insisted that suspects in the case had already been prosecuted and convicted, with judgments upheld at appellate levels, while the matter is currently before the Supreme Court.

PDP urged Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to focus on governance rather than what it described as attempts to revive old political narratives.

It also called on security agencies to monitor the situation closely, warning that such actions could heighten political tension in the state.

The party further appealed to residents, especially families of victims in Offa, not to allow their pain to be used for political purposes.

reports that Showunmi made the announcement during a courtesy visit to the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) secretariat in Abeokuta on Friday.

Showunmi argued that political parties may choose or endorse candidates, but insisted such arrangements must not deny voters a genuine electoral choice.

He said: “I will be running for governor in the 2027 governorship election. I have come to plead with you to set up a small committee… to determine how we can collaborate to make this happen.”

He also questioned whether Ogun State would experience a “coronation” or a competitive election process, urging stakeholders to allow open political contest.

The PDP chieftain noted that Ogun West’s long-standing exclusion from producing a governor is a legitimate grievance, but stressed that aspirations must still be tested through competition.
